History of Sindh Institute of Animal Health
Initially, this institute was Sindh Poultry Vaccine Centre Karachi which was established by Sindh Government through Sindh (Poultry Vaccine Centre) Act V of 1995. It was under the administrative control of the Livestock & Fisheries Department. The Centre turned out to be Pakistan’s largest vaccine production unit by producing more than 200.00 million doses annually for poultry and livestock. It also provided extensive diagnostic services for poultry to farmers across the province.
The Sindh Poultry Vaccine Centre Karachi played a vital role in the prevention of disease outbreaks in 1999 (H5N1 bird flu), 2002 (Gumboro Disease), 2004 (Bird flu), and outbreaks of Newcastle Disease in peacocks and indigenous chicken. It prevented further deaths of birds through timely diagnosis and extensive vaccination.
Due to the excellent performance of the SPVC Karachi in the related fields under the leadership of Dr. Nazir Hussain Kalhoro, it was felt to upgrade the Centre and increase its mandate and scope.
