The Department of Livestock and Fisheries Sindh is playing its role in the development of the livestock sector in Sindh. Livestock Department Sindh focuses on animal health, animal husbandry, animal breeding, animal production, animal research, poultry production, and other related aspects. The main objective of the Sindh Livestock Department is the development of the livestock and poultry sector by focusing on health, production, and breeding aspects. It also conducts research and maintains livestock farms in Sindh for livestock breed conservation.

Directorate General Livestock Sindh – Livestock Department Sindh

This directorate of Sindh Livestock Department covers the service delivery related to animal health and breeding services.

Directorate of Animal Husbandry Sindh

The Directorate of Animal Husbandry Sindh has historical importance and it was initially established in the 19th century. It primarily focuses on the improvement of animal production and health through disease control and better husbandry practices. Moreover, it focuses on modern feeding, management, and breeding techniques. It provides treatment and vaccination services. Moreover, it focuses on the prevention of diseases. It also educates the farmers. Veterinary Hospitals, Dispensaries, and Mobile Veterinary Units are operated under this directorate.

 

Directorate of Animal Breeding Sindh

The focus of this directorate of Sindh Livestock Department is on breed improvement through advanced breeding services. It was initially established as an artificial insemination Services project. Now it is a comprehensive directorate that provides artificial insemination and other breeding services all over Sindh. It is working on livestock development through genetic improvement to enhance productivity.

The directorate provides artificial insemination services for livestock through AI Centres, sub Centers, and field centers. Two Semen Production Units, one in Karachi and the other in Rohri, supply the semen for AI.

Directorate of Livestock Planning and Monitoring

Project planning, monitoring, and evaluation are the main functions of this directorate. It monitors and evaluates the departmental activities and projects and collects data. Project planning, project preparation, monitoring,g and Project evaluations are under this directorate.

 


 

Directorate General Livestock Research and Extension

The primary focus of this directorate of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries Sindh is on research in the livestock and poultry sector to provide research-based solutions for livestock services. It emphasizes disease diagnosis, disease surveillance, vaccine production, poultry production, and breeds. This directorate is located in Hyderabad.

 

Directorate of Veterinary Research and Diagnosis

Initially, it was the Central Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory which was established with the assistance of FAO/UNDP. Now it is a directorate of Veterinary Research and Diagnosis with a network of diagnostic labs emphasizing animal disease diagnosis and surveillance.

Central Veterinary Diagnostic Lab is located in Tando Jam. It has sub centers in Karachi, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Naushero Feroze, and Mithi.  This central lab of Sindh Livestock Department has Microbiology, Parasitology, Epidemiology, and Pathology Sections. Recently Molecular Biology Lab has also been added to CVDL. This directorate provides routine diagnostic services and conducts epidemiology surveys and studies on animal diseases and Zoonotic diseases. Disease surveillance and reporting is also an important function.

 

Vaccine Production Unit Tandojam – Livestock Department Sindh

This vaccine production unit is working under the Directorate of General Extension and Research. It produces vaccines of various diseases including Anthrax, HS, and other diseases.

 

Livestock Farms of Sindh

Livestock farms, under the Directorate General Livestock Research and Extension of the  Department of Livestock and Fisheries Sindh, work on various livestock breeds including Red Sindhi Cattle, Thari Cattle, Kundhi Buffalo, Kamori Goat, and other breeds. These farms have historical importance. Farms include:

    • Livestock Experimental Station (LEA) Karachi for Red Sindhi Cattle
    • Red Sindhi Cattle Breeding Farm (RSCBF) Tando Muhammad Khan
    • Livestock Experiment Station Nabisar Road for Thari Cow
    • Livestock Development & Research Farm For Kundi Buffaloes Rohri
    • Kamori Goat Farm, Khudabad Dadu

 

Directorate General Poultry Production and Research Sindh, Karachi

This directorate general of Department of Livestock and Fisheries Sindh is exclusively involved in production and research. Its focus is on disease management, poultry research, and training of poultry farmers. This directorate was initially established in 1970-71 under UNDP/FAO Support as Poultry Research Institute. This directorate provides Disease diagnosis, vaccination, and feed analysis services. Moreover, it educates farmers and provides consultancy services for rural and commercial poultry. It also conducts research for the development poultry breeds and advancement in poultry husbandry practices.

The divisions of this directorate include the Pathology Division, Breeding and Incubation Division, Housing and Management Division, and Nutrition Laboratory.
