
Livestock Breeding Services Authority Punjab
The Livestock Breeding Services Authority Punjab (LBSA Punjab) was established in 2014. It was established under the Punjab Livestock Breeding Act 2014. The main task of this authority is the regulation of breeding services in Punjab and the conservation of local genetic resources. Moreover, it raises awareness about the standards and quality of livestock breeding. It has set Livestock Breeding Standards for Punjab under this act.

Livestock Breed improvement is fundamental to the growth and development of the livestock sector. Superior livestock breeds enhance production which ultimately supports food security and economy. Moreover, it improves the profitability of farmers. Recognizing this, the LBSA Punjab operates as a regulatory and monitoring body for animal breeding services.
The main objective of the Livestock Breeding Services Authority Punjab is the development of superior genetic breeds. In collaboration with public and private stakeholders, it develops science-based standards for breeding practices aligning the global benchmarks.
Enforcement of Act by LBSA Punjab
Authority has set livestock breeding standards for breeding services including selection of animals for breeding, semen production, exotic semen import and usage, natural mating, artificial insemination, and other services. These activities are under Punjab Livestock Breeding Act 2014.
Authority enforces the act through breeding inspectors. The registrar is the custodian of the Authority. An appeal can be filed against the decision of the Registrar before the appellate board. Any punishable offense under the act is triable by the Tribunal. A person sentenced by the Tribunal may prefer to appeal before the Lahore High Court.
Functions of LBSA Punjab
The main functions of the Livestock Breeding Services Authority under the Punjab Livestock Breeding Act 2014 include:
Breeding Services Regulation: Ensuring compliance with the LBSA Act, the authority regulates breeding service providers, including breeders associations, Semen Production Units (SPUs), embryo production labs, sem and embryo importers, distributors, and AI technicians.
Public Awareness: The authority conducts outreach programs and workshops to educate stakeholders about the importance of quality standards in breeding services and their impact on the livestock sector.
Conservation and Development of Genetic Resources: It focuses on the conservation of indigenous breeds and the development of local genetic resources.

Focus on Indigenous Breeds
One of the key mandates of LBSA is the conservation and development of local genetic resources. It also approved breeders associations and has set standards for these associations. Breeding Authority is also focusing on the Sahiwal Cow. This cattle breed is known for its high milk yield, disease resistance, and adaptability to harsh climates.
