Directorates at Livestock Department Punjab
The Punjab Livestock Department operates through the three Director Generals:
- Directorate General of Extension
- Directorate General of Research
- Directorate General of Production

Directorate General Extension – Livestock Department Punjab
This is the primary wing of the livestock department which directly interacts with the farmers to provide the services of the department including health, breeding, and advisory services. This Directorate General has nine Divisional Directors at the Division level in Punjab. Under each divisional director, additional directors work at the District Level. At the Tahsil level, Deputy Directors operate the services while reporting to the Additional Director. Director Cholistan under DG Extension manages the livestock assets in Cholistan.
Director General Extension extends its services to the farmers through veterinary officers and para-veterinary staff. It has around 2250 Civil Veterinary Hospitals, Civil Veterinary Dispensaries, and Artificial Insemination Centers all over the Punjab.
Paraveterinary staff and supporting staff assist the officers. These veterinary hospitals and Dispensaries provide the services of treatment, vaccination, artificial insemination, and other services. These also provide advisory services at the facilities and through different activities in the areas. Moreover, the Department also provides services at the farmers doorstep through Mobile Veterinary Dispensaries and Motorbikes.
Directorate General Research – Livestock Department Punjab
This Directorate General Research of the Department of Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab is responsible for research and development. Its focused areas of research include disease surveillance, Vaccine production, Vaccine monitoring, livestock production research, and Poultry research. Different Research Institutes operate under DG Research.
Veterinary Research Institute:
Its main focus is on vaccine production and vaccine monitoring along with general research on various veterinary subjects including microbiology, pathology, Parasitology, and other subjects. Poultry Research Institute:
This research institute of Punjab Livestock Department is located in Rawalpindi with a special focus on the poultry sector. It covers poultry breeding, poultry health, poultry feeding, and R&D on poultry. It has eight poultry labs for disease diagnosis and surveillance in the poultry sector. It also collaborates with the poultry industry for technical support and policy matters. The department also organizes various training programs and training courses for the farmers. LPRI Bahadarnagar
Livestock Production Research Institute is located in Bahadarnagar Okara. The focus of this Institute is on livestock production especially small ruminants and equine production. It also focuses on fodder research including multi-cut grass. This institute has an Animal and Health Lab, Milk Lab, Feed Lab, DSC, Goat Conservation Section, Sheep Conservation Section, Cow Fatting Center, Beef Production, Buffalo Bull Mother Section, Indigenous Cattle Section, and Agriculture Section. Feed Mill Plant, TMR Plant, Milking Parlor Plant, Cow Raising Nursery, Dairy Section, Donkey Section, and also part of this institute.
Directorate of Animal Disease Diagnostic, Reporting and Surveillance
This directorate focuses on disease diagnostics, Disease Reporting, and Disease Surveillance. It has 36 labs in Punjab that provide diagnostic services to the farmers. Data on Diseases was also compiled and reported to the Provincial Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Lahore. This Directorate of Punjab Livestock Department is also focusing on advanced diagnostic techniques, AMR, and One Health in collaboration with national and international organizations.
Directorate General Production – Livestock Department Punjab
Directorate General Production of the Department of Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab has various livestock farms which are also research and training centers. The Directorate of Breed Improvement is also under this Directorate General. The focus of this department is on the development of livestock production through research, training, and breed improvement of livestock breeds. It also focuses on the research on buffalo.
Directorate Breed Improvement
This Directorate is directly involved in Breed Involvement activities through its field force. It provides artificial insemination services and other services directly to the farmers at Veterinary Hospitals, Dispensaries and Artificial Insemination Training Centers. It also maintains the record of breeding.

Buffalo Research Institute Pattoki
BRI Pattoki is a well-known institute of research on Buffalo. Its focus is on the improvement of Nili Ravi Buffalo Breed through research and progeny testing programs. Barani Livestock Production Research Institute, Kherimurat
Barani Livestock Production Research Institute BLPRI Kherimurat is located in Attock. It is a livestock production research institute with its focus on the livestock of the Barani areas of Punjab. This especially focuses on the Dhanni Breed of Cattle and animal feed of livestock in the Barani area.
RCCIB Jhang
Research Centre for Conservation of Indigenous Breed is the research centre for the improvement and conservation of local cattle breeds especially Sahiwal Cattle Breed. Previously it was dedicated for Sahiwal Cow only, but later other breeds of cattle were also included. It focuses on progeny testing and other programs for the conservation of cattle breeds in Punjab.
Livestock Experimental Stations
Department of Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab has 21 livestock farms which are livestock experimental stations. These farms facilitate research in livestock and agriculture. These farms also play an important role in livestock shows nationwide by displaying the animals.
Directorate of Livestock Services Training Centre – LSTC Bahadarnagar Okara
Directorate of Livestock Services Training Centre provides training opportunities to paravets in Punjab. It is also offering two years Livestock Assistant Diploma and other short courses. Six Para Veterinary Schools are also working under this directorate.
Directorate Planning & Evaluation – Livestock Department Punjab
This Directorate is involved in project planning and project evaluation of the Department of Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab. It also focuses on HR-related matters including human resources development in Livestock Department Punjab.
Directorate Communication and Extensions
This important directorate of the Department of Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab communicates on the behalf of Department. All Media related activities fall under this directorate.
