Livestock Department KPK – Directorate General Livestock Extension
The Livestock and Dairy Development Department (L&DD) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa plays its role in the development of the livestock and poultry sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Its primary role is the protection of animals from diseases and the improvement of their production. The Livestock Department KPK achieves its targets through research and extension services. It has two main divisions, the Directorate General Livestock Extension and Directorate General Livestock Research.
Directorate General Livestock Extension – Livestock Department KPK
The Directorate General Livestock Extension is the operational wing of the livestock department KPK. It addresses critical issues such as disease outbreaks, productivity challenges, and lack of modern farming practices.
Functions of DG Extension – Livestock Department KPK
The basic role of the Directorate General Livestock Extension of Livestock and Dairy Development Department (L&DD) is the prevention and control of livestock diseases including zoonotic diseases. It aims to enhance livestock and poultry production. Moreover, conservation and development of genetic resources of livestock and poultry are key priorities, along with capacity building for stakeholders. It also focuses on animal welfare, prevention of cruelty, and implementation of veterinary public health practices. It is also focusing on animal identification and traceability.
This Directorate also provides rehabilitation and relief services in disaster and natural calamities. Moreover, it organizes livestock fairs, shows, field days, and veterinary camps for the awareness and education of farmers.
Directorates under DG Extension – Livestock Department KPK
Directorate of Animal Health & Production
This Directorate is mainly responsible for the health and production of animals by prevention and control of livestock diseases. The establishment, monitoring, and supervision of service delivery units are its main functions. It provides animal health services and advisory services for the animals through veterinary hospitals, veterinary dispensaries, and Pet Clinics. It also collaborates with other directorates and departments and ensures regular disease reporting to epidemiologists.
Directorate of Poultry Health & Production
This Directorate of Livestock and Dairy Development Department (L&DD) Extension KPK puts its efforts to improve and develop rural and commercial poultry production. It provides health services, prevents and controls poultry diseases, and introduces modern techniques. It also carries out extension services for farmers awareness and training. Moreover, it also works on the improvement of poultry breeds.
Directorate of Breed Improvement & Farms
The conservation and development of local livestock breeds is the main focus of this department. It emphasizes livestock production enhancement through breed improvement of non-descript cattle and progeny testing programs. It provides quality semen for artificial insemination at its two Semen Production Units. Moreover, it has six livestock farms for the demonstration of modern farming techniques and best farm practices. It is also marinating the nucleus herd of exotic cattle breeds.

Directorate of L&DD Merged areas
This director extends the routine departmental activities to merged areas. This includes planning, proposing, and implementing the Livestock Accelerated Implementation Program (AIP), as well as the implementation of a business development program to support economic recovery. It coordinates with the federal government for cross-border issues to facilitate seamless operations.
Supporting Directorates – Livestock Department KPK Extension
Directorate of Epidemiology
The main role of this department is animal disease surveillance, reporting, investigation, and diagnosis by establishing and monitoring a comprehensive network of diagnostic laboratories across the province. It covers livestock and poultry diseases for epidemiological studies and communication with the federal government on disease-related matters. A Disease Investigation Lab and twenty-five Diagnostic Labs are working under this directorate. Besides disease surveillance, this directorate also focuses on capacity building for staff on disease diagnostics, reporting, and surveillance.
Directorate of Veterinary Public Health
This directorate provides technical services to slaughterhouses, including ante- and post-mortem examinations, to support the food inspection regime at the district level. Efforts focus on preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases, raising public awareness about various veterinary public health (VPH) activities, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of VPH initiatives.
Directorate of Livestock Production, Extension & Communication
Farmers’ awareness and communication about departmental activities is the main function of this directorate to enhance livestock production. This directorate develops and disseminates extension materials through telephonic, print, and electronic media.
Directorate of Planning
The preparation of Annual Development Programs (ADP), Public Sector Development Programs (PSDP), project documents, project completion reports, and project approvals for relevant forums are the main functions. It coordinates with other L&DD directorates and institutions for future planning and monitoring the development projects. Additionally, it also collaborates with development organizations.
Animal Husbandry In-Service Training Institute
The Main function of the training institute is the capacity building of department staff. Moreover, it also designs training courses for farmers and NGOs. It organizes seminars, workshops, and symposiums to enhance knowledge and skills.
