
Veterinary Research Institute – VRI Peshawar
Veterinary Research Institute Peshawar (VRI Peshawar) operates under the Directorate General Research of Livestock Department KPK. It was established in 1949 with the mission to conduct research on livestock and poultry diseases and the production of veterinary biologics along with diagnostic agents. Besides national services, VRI Peshawar also supported animal health in Afghanistan and Iran during emergencies.
History of VRI Peshawar
This is the pioneer veterinary research institute in Pakistan which was established in 1949 under the Federal Government as the Pakistan Animal Husbandry Research Institute (PAHRI). Under One unit in 1995, it was transferred to the West Pakistan Animal Husbandry Department. In 1971, it returned back under provincial control and the majority of its resources and personnel were transferred to the Veterinary Research Institute Lahore. Going through different developmental processes, VRI is the well-established Veterinary Research Institute in Peshawar.

The Veterinary Research Institute, Peshawar, offers a wide array of facilities to support animal health and productivity. It offers a series of disease diagnostics and feed testing. It has the following centers:
- Center of Microbiology and Biotechnology
The Center of Microbiology and Biotechnology focuses on disease diagnostics and research on various animal diseases. It has Bacteriology, Pathology, Mastitis, Brucella, Tuberculosis & Veterinary Public Health, ultrasonography and Biotechnology sections. Each section is equipped with advanced diagnostic tools for research and diagnostic services for the relevant diseases.
- Center of Parasitology and Poultry
Center of Parasitology and Poultry focuses on the research on internal and external parasites of livestock and poultry and parasitic disease diagnosis. It also focuses on the prevailing and emerging diseases of poultry. It has Poultry Pathology, Protozoology, Molecular Parasitology, Entomology, and Helminthology Sections.
- Center of Biological Production
This center produces vaccines against bacterial and viral diseases. Vaccines of this section include Hemorrhagic Septicemia Vaccine, Black Quarter Vaccine, Enterotoxaemia cum lamb dysentery Vaccine, Anthrax Spore Vaccine, Newcastle Disease, and Foot & Mouth Disease Vaccine.
- Foot & Mouth Disease Research Center
FMD Research Center consists of ELISA, PCR, Cell Culture, and Vaccine Production sections. This section produces trivalent FMD Vaccine and provides Serological and Molecular diagnostic facilities for FMD and PPR. It also conducts research on FMD and PPR. Moreover, it works as a reference lab for FMD and PPR Lab for KP.
