Poultry Research Institute Rawalpindi (PRI Rawalpindi) was established in 1978 with its exclusive focus on Poultry Research in the Department of Livestock and Dairy Development Punjab. Its mission is to support the poultry sector through research and development. It plays a pivotal role in disease diagnostics, water testing, feed testing, capacity building, and rural poultry development. Government Poultry Farms and Poultry Diagnostic Labs are the research facilities of this institute.

Functions of PRI Rawalpindi

  • Enhancement of Poultry Production through applied research and improvement in local poultry breeds to strengthen rural poultry
  • Studies on the biology, breeding, and behavior of indigenous and exotic poultry.
  • Economical and nutritionally balanced feed formulations and research on alternatives and supplements to reduce the cost of feed
  • Development of advanced poultry disease diagnostic techniques and provision of diagnostic services, water testing services, feed testing services, and other services for commercial poultry farms
  • Poultry Disease Surveillance and Management of emerging infectious diseases in poultry
  • Training for farmers and professionals in advanced poultry management techniques
  • Enhancing stakeholder linkages through events, seminars, and consultations.
  • Regulatory enforcement under Punjab Animal Feedstuff and Poultry Production Acts.

Diagnostic Services by PRI Rawalpindi

The Poultry Research Institute Rawalpindi has developed a network of 10 poultry diagnostic labs throughout the Punjab. These Poultry Diagnostic Labs support disease surveillance, risk management, and the development of health management protocols. These also provide diagnostic services. The central labs are located at Poultry Research Institute Rawalpindi. Key services of these poultry diagnostic labs include:

  • Post mortem and Clinical Examination of poultry and fancy birds, including diagnosis of coccidiosis and avian influenza.
  • Diagnostic Tests for Mycoplasma, Salmonella, E. coli and other pathogens
  • PCR-based diagnostics for avian influenza, Newcastle disease, and Marek’s disease.
  • Histopathology Lab services or Identification of diseases such as Marek’s disease, lymphoid leucosis, and ILT.

 

Feed and Water Testing Services

Feed and Water Testing Lab was established in 1980. It provides chemical analysis of feed ingredients and drinking water. Available tests for poultry include the analysis of moisture, crude protein, fat, fiber, ash, metabolizable energy, Aflatoxin, and minerals. Test for water include pH, total dissolved solids, hardness, and mineral content analysis.

 

Rural Poultry Development

The PRI Rawalpindi promotes the conservation and improvement of rural poultry breeds to enhance their production and disease resistance. The department has also distributed poultry birds at a subsidized rate among the farmers. Improved poultry breeds available at Government Poultry Farms are

Government Poultry Farms in Punjab

Poultry Research Institute has ten Government Poultry farms in different areas of Punjab including Attock, Bahawalnager, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujrat, Dina (Jehlum), Mianwali, Multan, and Sargodha. These farms provide opportunities for research on Poultry. Moreover, these also provide poultry and different poultry products.
