Pakistan participated enthusiastically in the Youth Conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) where Prime Minister National Youth Council Member Dr. Waseem Laghari represented Pakistan. He highlighted the potential of livestock and veterinary sector of Pakistan at SCO Youth Conference.
Potential of Livestock Highlighted at SCO Youth Conference
In his address, Dr. Waseem Laghari said that Pakistan’s livestock sector is a successful model of protein production, integrated farming system and rural development. Highlighting the importance of the livestock sector, he said that Pakistan produces about 65 to 70 million tons of milk and more than 20 billion eggs annually, which makes it one of the leading agricultural countries in the world.
He added that millions of small farmers are playing a key role in the regular supply chain of milk and meat based on Pakistan’s mixed farming system. The commercial poultry sector in Pakistan, as an organized industry, is playing an important role in the country’s economy and is providing affordable protein to the public as per world standards. The low cost of production of chicken and eggs in Pakistan was presented on the occasion as a key competitive advantage that creates trade opportunities in the region.

Role of Veterinary Services
Dr. Waseem Laghari, while emphasizing the role of veterinary services in the development of livestock, said that the veterinary system is key to disease control, increased production and food security. He described the large number of expert veterinary and agricultural graduates in Pakistan as a major asset for the region.

Recommendations at SCO Youth Conference
Dr. Waseem Laghari of National Youth Council also proposed the establishment of an SCO Youth Entrepreneurship Platform to provide opportunities for innovation, investment and international cooperation for youth in the agriculture and livestock sectors. He also stressed the need to promote veterinary diagnostics, disease surveillance and climate change-adapted livestock systems.
Pakistan’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Youth Conference reaffirmed the country’s commitment to continue playing a leading role in promoting food security, sustainable agriculture, and veterinary cooperation in the region.
