Buffalo Breeds of Pakistan by Dr. Zafar Iqbal. Nili Ravi Buffalo, Kundi Buffalo and Azi Kheli Buffalo, are breeds of buffalo. Nili Ravi Breed is the best breed. It is black gold of Pakistan. Furthermore, Kundi Breed belongs to Sindh and plays an important role in food security of this province.  On the other hand, Azi Kheli Breed belongs to Sawat. People call it white buffalo. Its body color changes with change in temperature.

Nili Ravi Buffalo

The Nili Ravi buffalo is the most famous milking breed of Pakistan. This breed is mainly from Punjab and is considered to be the representative breed of Pakistani buffalo worldwide.

Salient features of this breed include:

• The body is usually black in color.
• A white mark can be found on the forehead.
• There is a white tuft at the tip of the tail.
• It has high milking capacity.
• It produces more milk if taken care of well.

The Blue Ravi breed is also highly appreciated internationally and is considered one of the best genetic resources of Pakistan.

Kundi Buffalo Breed

The Kundi breed is native to different areas of Sindh. This breed performs better in hot and dry environments.

Characteristics of the Kundi breed:

• The body is strong and heavy.
• The color is usually black.
• It is able to withstand harsh weather conditions.
• It is considered important in terms of both milk and breeding.

Azi kheli Buffalo

The Azukheli breed is from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This breed is known for its strong physique and ability to adapt to local conditions.

Azkhel Buffalo breed:

• Performs well in the local environment.
• Can withstand harsh weather conditions.
• Is considered important for both milk and meat purposes.
