Proper care of newborn buffalo calves is essential for increasing the production of buffaloes and reducing the mortality rate. If proper attention is not given immediately after birth, the calves become weak, susceptible to diseases and their development is affected.
Buffalo Calf Management Immediate care after birth
The first thing to do after birth is to ensure that the breathing of calf is restored. If there is difficulty in breathing, the moisture from the nose and mouth should be cleared. It is also important to dry the body of newborne calf to prevent cold.

Importance of colostrum (first milk)
The mother’s first milk (colostrum) is very important for the newborn calf. The antibodies present in it protect the baby from various diseases. The amount of colostrum should be according to the weight of the baby. The calf should be fed colostrum within 4 to 5 hours of birth.
Consumption of colostrum in the first 24 hours plays a fundamental role in building immunity against diseases.
Cleaning of navel
Immediately after birth, the navel should be cleaned with a disinfectant solution to prevent infection. In case of improper cleaning of the navel, various bacterial diseases can develop.
Buffalo Calf Management and Feeding
As the buffalo calf grows older, its nutritional needs also increase. Initially, milk is the main food, but later:
- Providing good quality feed
- Wheat
- Mineral salts
- Clean water
It is necessary to ensure better growth.
Disease prevention and Buffalo Calf Management
Newborn buffalo calves are relatively susceptible to diseases. Therefore:
- Timely vaccination
- Regular medical check-ups
- Clean environment
- Suitable housing
Are extremely important.
If the calf shows symptoms such as lethargy, fever, diarrhea or decreased milk intake, a veterinarian should be consulted immediately.
Housing and management
Keep the buffalo calves in a dry, clean and ventilated place. Calves raised in a damp and polluted environment are more susceptible to diseases.
Good rearing of newborn buffaloes guarantees better milk production, good reproduction and low mortality rate in the future. Healthy and productive animals can be produced by timely supply of colostrum, balanced diet, proper housing and following disease prevention measures.
