Dairy Stakeholder around the country attended this forum. Besides Livestock Department. Punjab Food Authority also collaborated. Representatives of dairy associations also joined.

The second Dairy Forum on the topic of achieving food security through an environmentally friendly and sustainable dairy value chain under the Capacity Building of Dairy Farmers and Industry Stakeholders on Country Value Chain Project organized by the Department of Dairy Technology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, was held at a local hotel in Lahore.

 

Dignitaries at Dairy Forum

The forum was chaired by Secretary Livestock Punjab Muhammad Masood Anwar. Vice Chancellor Veterinary University Lahore Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Vice Chancellor Education University Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Director General Punjab Food Authority Raja Jahangir Anwar, Member Planning and Development Punjab Aslam Javed, Director Corporate Affairs and Agribusiness Friesland Campina Engro Pakistan, Saud Ahmed Pasha, Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Veterinary University Prof. Dr. Saima, Project Director Dr. Muhammad Junaid along with dairy professionals, researchers, dairy farmers and livestock officers participated.

Secretary Livestock Comments

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary Livestock said that the Livestock Department is always striving for breed improvement, genetics, increasing livestock production, capacity building of dairy farmers and improving veterinary services. The two-year-long National Value Chain Project organized by the Veterinary University is a milestone in the development of the dairy sector. He said that the Veterinary University is playing a key role in the development of livestock. He said that we cannot move forward without controlling foot-and-mouth disease.

 

Speeches at Dairy Forum

Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed shed detailed light on various aspects of the project and also told the participants about the satisfactory results achieved in the development of the dairy sector. He said that although this project is being successfully completed next month, there is a dire need to start such projects in the poultry and meat sectors in the near future, which will help in food safety and food security.

Professor Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha said that the scope of this project should be expanded and all veterinary educational institutions of Pakistan should work on this model.

Director General Punjab Food Authority Raja Jahangir Anwar highlighted the importance of regulatory framework in the dairy sector. Dairy processor Rafaqat Anjum, Muzammil Khanani of Delfa, Tahira Saeed of Artisan Cheese Factory and others also spoke. Project Director Dr. Muhammad Junaid gave a detailed briefing to the participants about the achievements of the Country Value Chain Project.

 

Participation of Farmers

Dairy farmers from all over the country also informed the forum participants about their achievements in the dairy forum. Chairman and organizer of Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association Pakistan, Shahbaz Rasool Waraich said on this occasion that the small dairy farmer will be eliminated due to non-recovery of production costs. Due to the abundance of adulterated milk in the market, pure milk is not available at a reasonable price. Punjab Food Authority should determine strict punishments against the adulteration mafia. Along with this, milk prices should be decapped.

Panel Discussion

In the panel discussion, Dr. Muhammad Nasir of Friesland Campina Engro Pakistan, Farah Athar, Deputy Director of Punjab Food Authority, Muhammad Zubair of Pakistan Dairy Association and Imran Saleh of Farmers Cheese Making, along with Dr. Muhammad Junaid, Dr. Naveed-ul-Haq and others discussed important topics regarding the improvement of the dairy sector.
