Scientists from the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Bahauddin Zakaria University, Multan, have successfully conducted a laparoscopic artificial insemination experiment in sheep of ordinary farmers under field conditions.

Under a research project funded by the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, Assistant Professor Dr. Ijaz Ahmed of the faculty, along with Associate Professor Dr. Saleem Akhtar and PhD scholar Dr. Tayyab Khan, conducted this successful experiment using modern technology at the university. For this purpose, they visited different farmers in the field and convinced them to take advantage of this technology. Two farmers offered their forty sheep for the experiment.

After going through the hormonal synchronization phase, these sheep were artificially inseminated through laparoscopy. This insemination was done at different timings. Insemination Cryopreserved semen from the university laboratory was used for insemination. After twenty-three days, the pregnancy of these goats was checked through ultrasound. According to the results, the pregnancy rate was 60 percent after 48 hours, 57 percent after 60 hours, 30 percent after 72 hours and 10 percent after 96 hours of Progesterone Intravaginal Sponge removal. In total, 14 sheep gave birth to 22 babies this month.
