President Alvi chairs meeting on livestock sector

A meeting on meat exports and processing was held under the chairmanship of President Dr. Arif Alvi. The President stressed the need to focus on the development of the livestock sector and said that it can help in economic development, food security and poverty alleviation. In this meeting on livestock sector, he said that the livestock sector has a great potential to earn foreign exchange, the relevant departments should take steps to facilitate meat exporters and solve their problems.
The meeting was attended by senior officers from the Presidency, as well as Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Khurshid Ahmed, Assistant Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Riyatsat Wasiullah, Secretary Livestock Punjab Syed Asad-ur-Rehman Gilani, Secretary Livestock Sindh Ijaz Ahmed Mahesar, Secretary Livestock Balochistan Tayyab Lehri and officers of the Livestock Department. Officers of the Livestock Departments of other provinces also attended the meeting.
Discussion in the Meeting on Livestock sector
On this occasion, the status of implementation of the decisions taken in the previous meeting was reviewed. Secretary Livestock Punjab gave a presentation on foot-and-mouth disease in animals and informed about the efforts made by the provincial government to prevent it. Various suggestions for preventing the disease in animals were reviewed in the meeting. The participants expressed serious concerns over the information given by the Punjab Livestock Department regarding foot-and-mouth disease in the meeting.
The participants in the meeting demanded that the claims made for the prevention of foot-and-mouth disease be reviewed and instructions be given for serious steps in this regard. The lack of foot-and-mouth disease vaccination in Punjab and the erosion of the benefits achieved through vaccination in the past years were also discussed. The meeting also expressed reservations about the ban on slaughtering female animals and the claim of foot-and-mouth free zones in this regard. Along with this, aspects related to imported vaccines and local production of vaccines for foot-and-mouth disease were also highlighted.

Addressing the meeting, President Dr. Arif Alvi said that there is a need to focus on the development of the livestock sector in the country, the development of this sector can help in economic development, food security and poverty alleviation. He said that the livestock sector has a great potential to earn foreign exchange, it is necessary to increase the export value by manufacturing products according to international standards.
He highlighted the importance of the livestock sector for earning foreign exchange and creating employment opportunities and urged the private sector to play its role in promoting livestock.
The President said that there is a need to simplify the process of certification of halal food and the process of issuing quarantine certificates. He said that the government is committed to resolving the problems of meat exporters and processors.
Mian Abdul Manan, Syed Hassan Raza, Bilal Tata, Kamran Khalili and others from the All Pakistan Meat Exporters and Processors Association participated. In the meeting, exporters informed about the problems and difficulties faced in meat exports.
