First Calf Born with Gender Sorted Semen of GCLI
Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI) gender-sorted semen project has started yielding practical results. The first calf from gender sorted semen has been born. This semen, produced at GCLI’s state-of-the-art laboratory, was inseminated in a local cow in Okara. This is the female calf of GCLI’s high genetic potential Oscar bull that belongs to the Holstein Friesian breed.
Impact of Modern Gender Sorting Technology in Pakistan
Chairman Green Corporate Livestock Initiative Major General (R) Shuja Anwar said that the provision of modern gender sorting technology in Pakistan has started yielding positive results. The birth of the first calf is an important proof of the success of the project and the practical use of modern technology.
He said that this initiative will help improve the economic condition of farmers, increase the productivity of livestock and have a positive impact on the national economy. The promotion of modern genetic technology will not only pave the way for increasing milk and meat production but will also help in increasing farmers’ income, improving the genetic potential of the national livestock and creating a successful livestock sector for the national economy.
The World’s Best Genetics in Pakistan
Chief Operating Officer Green Corporate Livestock Initiative Brigadier (R) Ehtesham Younis said that the world’s best modern breeding technology has been introduced in Pakistan. The world’s best breeding bulls with high genetic potential have been imported from the US, Brazil, Australia and other countries to accelerate the process of genetic improvement in Pakistan’s livestock sector. He said that bringing modern technology to local farmers is one of the priorities of GCLI.
Director Livestock GCLI Col (R) Abdul Rehman Qureshi said that along with dairy breeds, gender-sorted semen of beef breeds is also being provided. Special importance is being given to quality in all stages of preparation and supply of semen so that livestock farmers can get better genetic potential of superior breeds.
Gender Sorted Semen of Imported and Local Breeds
Director Herd Transformation Col (retd) Imran Masood Khan said that gender-sorted semen of Friesian, Jersey, Charbray, Brahman, Gir, Nellore, Girolendo, Wagyu, Angus, Braford and other superior breeds are being provided. Along with this, work is also being done to provide gender-sorted semen of Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, Cholistani, Kundi, Aziz Khayli, Nili Ravi Buffalo and other local breeds so that genetic improvement and productivity of local animals can be increased.
He said that the use of gender-sorted semen will provide farmers with better opportunities to obtain calves of high genetic quality of the desired sex. The use of semen from more local and imported high genetic bulls can make the herd transformation process in Pakistan’s dairy and beef sectors more effective. He further said that livestock farmers should take full advantage of this modern technology.
