UVAS Lahore organized a Round Table Dialogue on Livestock Sector Development in Pakistan. Caretaker Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research Prof Dr Kauser Abdulla Malik attended. Caretaker Minister for Livestock Punjab Ibrahim Hasan Murad was also present. VC UVAS Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad, VC University of Education Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, VC CUVAS Bahawalpur Prof Dr Muhammad Sajjad Khan and stakeholders also attended the event. University also invited Stake holders from public and private sectors including academicians, researchers, professionals and representatives from poultry, dairy & meat industries. Stakeholders gave recommendations related to major challenges in this dialogue on livestock sector development.

Prof Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik said that the development of agriculture, livestock, dairy and poultry sectors are the priority of the government because these sectors are the backbone of the national economy. He said that foot and mouth disease is a major issue. Therefore scientists should take responsibility to work on war footing for prevention of this disease. Minister said the government will take dialogue recommendations on livestock sector development seriously.

Caretaker Minister Punjab

Mr Ibrahim Hasan Murad said it is the need of time to focus on local breeds’ improvement. We should also focus on prevention of deadly diseases and crops farming through hybrid seeds. We should focus these seed to enhance fodder production in Punjab. Provincial Minister said that the Punjab livestock department has established disease-free compartments in Punjab. Department takes care for the vaccination of animals at large scale. Punjab has also imposed traceability emergency for the benefit of livestock farming community.

UVAS contribution for Livestock Sector

Prof Dr Nasim Ahmad said that UVAS is working very closely with livestock sector. Poultry, dairy, meat, food industries and related sectors are in close contact.  VC said that UVAS in collaboration with the Livestock Department has recently established livestock policy. He said the university is playing the role of a think tank to solve livestock, poultry and dairy industries issues.

Prof Talat Pasha said that an enabling environment is required for the poultry, meat and dairy industry to grow. He said that if there is growth in industry, there will be food security and employment generation.

Recommendations for Livestock Sector

Poultry stakeholders called for solving the problem of soybean import and immediate release of consignments from the ports after their biosafety testing. They also demanded withdrawal of tax on raw chicken/poultry. Meat stakeholders demanded implementation of animal slaughter control act. They also demanded stopping of increasing trend of female cattle slaughtering to save livestock sector. They also suggested strengthening of quarantine department and stopping of interprovincial livestock movement. The meat stakeholders emphasized for using quality bulls to promote local breeds.

The dairy stakeholders demanded ban on the import of dry milk (whey powder) to boost local dairy industry. They also demanded de-capping of milk price. They also suggested electricity tariff rate for livestock industry should be as being charged from the agriculture sector. Dairy stakeholders also demanded subsidy and support from the government as being provided to the agriculture sector. Participants also emphasized on Climate smart farming and academia-industry linkages.
