Fleming Fund Country Grant collaborated with different institutes to observe Word Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2023. They conducted different activities during this World AMR Awareness Week 2023. Fleming Fund Pakistan collaborated with Food and Agriculture Organization, World Health Organization, Department of Livestock, National Institute of Health, National Agricultural Research Center, and other institutions for various AMR Awareness activities during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2023. Besides AMR in humans and animals, they also focused on AMR in Poultry and antimicrobial resistance in fish.

Experts say that unnecessary use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents is disastrous. Reckless use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial drugs can destroy the effectiveness of these drugs. In such a case, the microbes become resistant to the medicine and it becomes less effective.

Word Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2023 at PIMS

Fleming Fund Pakistan organized an awareness walk at PIMS Islamabad. Not only medical professionals but students also participated. Moreover, experts provided AMR Awareness to the general public.

AMR Awareness for Women

Lady professionals also focused on women for World AMR Awareness Week 2023. They organized hiking activities in Margalla Hills. Women and students from different social circles participated in this activity. Dr. Jawaria Alam along with Dr. Ayesha and Dr. Syeda Anum Hadi discussed the careful use of antibiotics. Moreover, questions from women were also answered on this occasion related to World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2023.

Besides this hiking activity, they also conducted a session with rural women. Department of Livestock collaborated on this. Besides discussion on the veterinary use of antibiotics, experts also informed to be careful for the family use of medicines.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Fish and National Symposium on AMR

Experts also talked in a symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance in Fish at Quaid-e-Azam University. Pakistan Fisheries Society collaborated for this symposium. Furthermore, National Institute of Health in collaboration with Fleming Fund Pakistan organized National Symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance. Besides different talks, they also launched the WHO Antibiotics Handbook.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Poultry

PRI organized a symposium and poster competition regarding AMR in Poultry. Director Poultry Research Institute Rawalpindi and other experts focused on this topic. Students also participated in this activity. Dr. Muhammad Afzal also graced this activity.

World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2023 Closing

Closing ceremony of World AMR Awareness Week 2023 held at National Agricultural Research Center. Experts suggested continuing the cooperation with various institutions. Moreover, they suggested continuity in conducting awareness programs. They also focused on the promotion of policy advocacy and research. Additionally, they also suggested community and youth involvement.

What is World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

The world observes World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week annually. World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is observed every year from 18 to 24 November. The objective of the activity is the raise awareness of AMR. This is observed in the context of One Health. Different institutions in Pakistan observed World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2023 also.

What is Antimicrobial Resistance?

Overuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents is dangerous. Continuous use of these medicines makes them less effective. Microorganism becomes used and they develop resistance against these medicines. In this case, these medicines will not work against the disease. This is called Antimicrobial Resistance. That is why; experts recommend using these medicines judiciously. To disseminate this message, the world observes World Antimicrobial Awareness Week.
