FAO Pakistan organized Progressive Management Pathway PMP workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance. The aim was step by step AMR Control in Pakistan. PMP Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance – AMR
Progressive Management Pathway (PMP) workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was organized by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Pakistan.
The aim of the workshop was to review the situation regarding the step-by-step control of antimicrobial resistance in Pakistan and the implementation of the National Action Plan formulated in this regard by involving all the stakeholders of the food, agriculture and livestock sectors. More than fifty experts belonging to human health, animal health, agriculture, poultry, dairy, food, pharmaceutical industry and other sectors participated in the workshop.

AHC on Antimicrobial Resistance – AMR
Animal Husbandry Commissioner (AHC)/Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) Dr Muhammad Akram appreciated the efforts of FAO and welcomed the implementation of PMP tool in Pakistan. He said that the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer has been working on the surveillance of AMR and AMU in Pakistan for the past few years and guidelines have been formulated involving all stakeholders. A pilot project on surveillance is working in this regard. He welcomed the ACT project and assured the complete support on behalf of CVO office and MoNFSR regarding project implementation.
National AMR Focal Person (Livestock) Dr. Muhammad Abu Bakr highlighted the activities related to animal health in Pakistan’s National Action Plan on AMR. briefed the participants about the PMP tool.
Discussion at Workshop on Antimicrobial Resistance
The workshop continued for three days in which the four segments of the Progressive Management Pathway including Awareness, Evidence, Governance, Practice were discussed in detail during six different sessions. The results of the discussion at the workshop revealed that Pakistan has done significant work on awareness and evidence around antimicrobial resistance, but much work is needed in governance and practice. The participants also identified the next steps for the identified gaps.
Closing Session
During closing session, FAO Pakistan Livestock Advisor Dr Muhammad Afzal highlighted the need to improve legislation and governance. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the AMR coordination unit in the CVO office. Dr. Qurban Ali, Veterinary Representative of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP)) in his remarks highlighted that these workshops provide us the opportunity of self-evaluation and realign ourselves with regional and global needs.
Food Safety Consultant Dr. Zafar Mahmood emphasized the need to involve food safety officials and other stakeholders with the Livestock Department to implement Codex standards. Dr. Jawaria Alam, Dr. Mashkoor Mohsin, Dr. Farooq Tareen and others also expressed their views.
Executive Director, National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad Prof. Dr. Major General Aamir Ikram was the chief guest for the concluding session of the workshop. NIH is keen to engage stakeholders from the agriculture, livestock and environmental health sectors as the national AMR focal point, he said. He said that NIH is regularly publishing AMR newsletter on quarterly basis from last three years now and the newsletter have equal representation from the human, animal and environmental health sectors. He welcomed the ACT project and assured that NIH being the national AMR focal point will provide the complete support to its animal health counterparts.
