Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery in Small Animals and Veterinary Orthopedics
University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences organized a Training Workshop on Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery. The Department of Surgery of UVAS organized this workshop on veterinary Orthopedic Surgery at the Veterinary Academy. Experts discussed different types of orthopedic surgery. Prof Dr Mazhar Iqbal and Dr Akmal Rana were the resource persons for the training. Besides the introduction of veterinary orthopedics, they also impart training on intramedullary pinning in animals and bone plating in animals.
Dean Faculty of Veterinary Science Prof Dr Aneela Durani presided over the concluding ceremony of the workshop and distributed certificates among participants. Chairperson Department of Surgery Prof Dr Ayesha Hassan, Workshop Organizing Secretary Dr Hamid Akbar, Dr Naveed Hussain, and other faculty members also joined the ceremony.
Introduction to Veterinary Orthopedics
Veterinary orthopedics is a specialized field within animal healthcare dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders in small animals. This branch of veterinary medicine plays a crucial role in ensuring the overall health and well-being of pets, as musculoskeletal issues can significantly affect an animal’s mobility and quality of life. Conditions commonly encountered in veterinary practice include fractures, ligament injuries, joint problems, and developmental disorders. Each of these issues can emerge from various sources, including trauma and different diseases.
Fractures are often a result of accidents or falls, resulting in broken bones. These conditions require prompt attention and, in many cases, Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery is the option. Similarly, ligament injuries, dislocation, and other orthopedic problems can also be created. Intramedullary pinning in animals & bone plating in animals are the common procedure in fractures.

Diagnosis in Veterinary Orthopedics
Orthopedic Vet employs advanced diagnostic tools such as radiographs (X-rays), computed tomography (CT Scan), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the extent of the injury and to devise an appropriate treatment plan. Moreover, an expert vet can also diagnose minor conditions through visual examination. Different situations require different options for treatment including surgery.
Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery
Veterinary orthopedic surgery involves the surgical procedure that repairs the bone or manages any other musculoskeletal condition. There have been significant advancements over the years, leading to improved surgical techniques, enhanced postoperative care, and better outcomes for pets. Innovations in minimally invasive surgery techniques have resulted in reduced recovery times and less postoperative pain for animals. Moreover, the introduction of advanced materials, such as bioactive implants and improved fixation devices, has revolutionized the approach to treating complex orthopedic conditions in small animal orthopedic surgery. On the other hand, Intramedullary pinning in animals & bone plating in animals are among the common techniques.

Veterinary orthopedic surgeons play an integral role not in just surgical interventions, but also pre-surgical assessments and rehabilitative care. Pets can return to their regular activities as swiftly and safely as possible depending upon the decision of the vet. The field of small animal orthopedic surgery is constantly evolving, driven by research and technology, which provides hope for better treatments and outcomes for animals suffering from orthopedic issues.
Types of Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery
Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery encompasses a variety of surgical procedures aimed at treating musculoskeletal issues in small animals, such as dogs and cats. Among the most common types of orthopedic surgery are fracture repairs, cruciate ligament surgeries, and dental surgeries related to bone structure. Each of these procedures addresses specific conditions, employing different surgical techniques tailored to the unique anatomical needs of the animal.

Veterinary Orthopedics and Fracture
Fracture repair is one of the most frequently performed orthopedic surgeries. It is indicated when an animal suffers from a broken bone due to trauma or some other issue. The surgical technique may involve the use of plates, screws, or intramedullary pins to stabilize the fracture, promoting proper healing. A thorough evaluation of the fracture type and location is crucial in determining the optimal approach. Pre-operative assessments and decision making is the most important factor to minimize surgical risks and complications.
Cruciate Ligament Surgery
Cruciate ligament surgery addresses tears of the cranial cruciate ligament, a common injury in canine patients. This condition often leads to instability in the knee joint, resulting in pain and impairment of mobility. Surgery can involve techniques such as the Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) or the Extracapsular Repair, each offering distinct advantages depending on the individual case.
Intramedullary Pinning in Animals and Bone Plating in Animals
Veterinary orthopedics encompasses a variety of surgical techniques aimed at restoring function and alleviating pain in small animals. Among these, intramedullary pinning in animals and bone plating in animals are fundamental methods, particularly in case of fracture. Intramedullary pinning in animals involves the insertion of metal pins into the bone, offering a straightforward approach to achieving alignment and stability. This technique is often indicated for fractures that are non-displaced, or when the fracture requires intraoperative alignment to prevent malunion.
Bone plating in animals, on the other hand, involves the use of a metal plate to support and stabilize fractured bones. This method is advantageous for more complex fractures or those that require greater strength during the healing process. The plates are secured to the bone using screws.
The choice between pinning and plating depends upon the nature of the fracture, the age and size of the animal, and the overall health of the patient. Expert orthopedic assessment is very important for the right decision.

Both techniques require a surgical approach to ensure proper alignment and achieve optimal healing. Surgeons must take care to avoid damaging surrounding tissue while accurately positioning pins and plates. Each method has its advantages and limitations. For instance, while pinning may be less invasive and allow for faster recovery. However, it may not provide adequate support for certain types of fractures. On the other hand, plating offers superior stability but requires a more extensive surgical procedure.
Post-operative care in Veterinary Orthopedic surgery
Post-operative care and rehabilitation play a crucial role in the recovery of small animals that have undergone veterinary orthopedic surgery. The goal of this phase is to ensure optimal healing while minimizing the risk of complications. One of the first steps in the recovery process is to monitor the animal for any signs of unforeseen complications, such as excessive swelling, bleeding, or unusual behavior.
Effective pain management is essential during the recovery period. Veterinarians may prescribe medications to alleviate discomfort and assist in a smoother recovery.
Rehabilitation techniques are vital for recovery after orthopedic surgery in animals. Physical therapy serves as a cornerstone of rehabilitation, helping to strengthen the muscles, restore mobility, and improve overall function. Many veterinary practices offer hydrotherapy, which involves underwater exercises that reduce stress on joints while allowing the animal to regain strength and flexibility. Guided exercise programs, designed specifically for the individual pet’s needs, can also aid in the rehabilitation process, boosting recovery outcomes significantly.
