Two Nations Theory, Independence & Celebrations
This day is not merely about celebrations, decorations, or festivities. It is a day to think, understand, and reflect. To truly appreciate 14 August 1947, we must first understand the history of this region and the events that unfolded before that historic day. Only then can we fully comprehend what happened on 14 August—and, more importantly, why it happened.
Understanding the Historical Journey
Our younger generation should know how the Muslim presence in this region began with the arrival of Muhammad bin Qasim in 712 AD.
They should learn about the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate (1206–1526) and the rise and fall of the Mamluks, Khaljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodhis. They should also understand the beginning of the Mughal Empire in 1526, its rise, the gradual expansion of the East India Company, and finally the formal end of the Mughal Empire in 1857.
During this long historical journey, Muslims and Hindus experienced changing political and social relationships. Understanding the role religion played in governance and society during different periods is also essential.
The War of Independence and the Vision of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan
Our youth should also learn about the War of Independence of 1857 against the East India Company and the role played by Muslims during this struggle.
They should understand the farsighted vision of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, his emphasis on modern education, and his efforts to establish educational institutions that would prepare Muslims for changing times.
They should also know how, after the failure of the 1857 uprising, severe repression followed and how power was formally transferred from the East India Company to the British Crown.
From the Freedom Movement to the Pakistan Movement
The younger generation should also understand how the struggle that began in 1857 gradually evolved into the movement for Pakistan during the early twentieth century.
They should know about:
- The establishment of the All-India Muslim League in 1906.
- Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah joining the Muslim League in 1913.
- Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s historic address in 1930, presenting the vision of a separate homeland for Muslims.
- The results of the 1937 elections and the policies of the Congress ministries that strengthened Muslim political concerns.
- The growing support for the Muslim League.
- The adoption of the Pakistan Resolution in 1940.
- The decisive elections of 1946.
- The violence and persecution faced by Muslims during the months leading to Partition in 1947.
- Finally, the establishment of Pakistan on 14 August 1947 after immense sacrifices.
These are the chapters of history that every child and every young Pakistani should know.
Knowing History Gives Meaning to Freedom
When history is understood, people begin to understand purpose.
Only then can they truly appreciate the sacrifices made to achieve that purpose and realize the value of the freedom obtained through those sacrifices.
When history is known, Independence Day becomes more than a celebration—it becomes a day of reflection, gratitude, responsibility, and national consciousness.
The Ideological Basis of Pakistan
If the objective had merely been to establish a welfare state, then the independence of a united India might have been considered sufficient.
However, Pakistan emerged with an ideological foundation.
That ideology took the form of a formal political demand in 1940, eventually leading to the creation of Pakistan. It was based on the belief that the Muslims of the subcontinent constituted a distinct nation with their own identity, civilization, and political aspirations.
From the era of Emperor Akbar to the events of 1947, history shaped and strengthened this idea. Today, Pakistan exists on the world map as an independent state because of that historical journey.
History Continues to Shape Perspectives
According to this perspective, contemporary events continue to reinforce the importance of understanding the circumstances in which Pakistan was created.
The present condition of Muslims in parts of the region, and developments relating to Indian-administered Kashmir, are viewed by many as reminders of the concerns expressed by leaders such as Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah during the Pakistan Movement.
These events remain part of an ongoing historical and political discussion that continues to shape opinions in the region.
A Tribute to the Sacrifices for Freedom
The freedom we enjoy today and the opportunity to live in an independent country are the result of countless sacrifices.
On this Independence Day, we pay tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives, homes, and families for the creation of Pakistan. We also salute the men and women who continue to safeguard the country’s borders and work for its security.
Happy Independence Day. May this day inspire us not only to celebrate our freedom but also to understand our history, appreciate the sacrifices of those who came before us, and strengthen our commitment to Pakistan’s future.
