How to improve Livestock Extension Services in Pakistan | Science into Action workshop held at Islamabad | پاکستان میں لائیوسٹاک ایکسٹنشن سروسز کی بہتری
The first workshop titled “Science into Action” was organized in Islamabad in collaboration with the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore, Dairy Beef Project and Pakistan Agricultural Research Council.
The objective of the one-day national workshop was to discuss the improvement of livestock extension services and veterinary services in Pakistan, focusing on policies and programs related to smallholder farmers, to share the experiences gained from the Dairy Beef Project in this regard and to formulate recommendations based on expert opinions.
The workshop was attended by Australian High Commissioner Geoffrey Shaw, Vice Chancellor Veterinary University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Vice Chancellor University of Education Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Khurshid Ahmed, Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council Dr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, Research Manager Australian Institute for International Agricultural Research Dr. Anna Okello, Dr. Humira Iqbal, Dr. Anjum, Dairy Beef Project Team, senior officials of Livestock and Dairy Development Board, Provincial Livestock and Dairy Development Departments and private sector experts, among others.
Addressing the ceremony, Australian High Commissioner Geoffrey Shaw said that Pakistan has a lot of potential in the livestock sector. We are working with Pakistan to improve the livestock sector. He said that we are trying to control livestock diseases in Pakistan. The livestock sector is of utmost importance in Pakistan, which will not only meet the country’s needs through the use of modern dairy technology in the production of milk and other dairy products, but will also generate valuable foreign exchange through imports.
Dr. Khurshid Ahmed said that different breeds of animals are being bred in Pakistan and projects are also being worked on for genetic improvement. He said that Pakistan wants to obtain small animals such as sheep and goats from Australia, for which we hope that the Australian authorities will support Pakistan. Dr. Khurshid further said that the research sector is of utmost importance in terms of livestock extension, which will not only help in policy making, but also success can be achieved in a short time by working on modern research and scientific projects.
In the workshop, Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Professor Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Dr. Humaira Iqbal and other participants also expressed their views regarding livestock extension services. During the workshop, participants were informed about important issues related to livestock extension, the challenges faced, and various methods to overcome them.
