Research on Saanen Breed Goats in Pakistan, Feeding  and Milk Production

Research Directorate of Livestock Department KPK is working on Saanen Goat in Pakistan ( سانن بکری ). Experts are doing research on the Saanen Breed of Goat at the Research Station in Swat. They are working on  Feeding of Breed of Saanen Goats and Saanen Goat Milk Production Per Day. The department has also distributed these goats among local farmers. Dr. Nadir Khan is in charge of this Research Station. The department imported a hundred purebred goats in December 2020. They have given remarkable results in production.

Feeding of Saanen Breed of Goat

Dr. Nadir Khan said that they are feeding total mixed ration (TMR). This ration is rich in herbal choline. Feeding this feed to pregnant goats ( سانن بکری ), especially in the last 60 days, gave birth to a record weight of 4.8 kg. Along with this, Saanen Goat Milk Production per Day also increased by 1 kg per day.

He further said that due to good diet and care, the fertility of Sanan goats is 100%. Moreover, the growth of children has also increased significantly. Saanen Goat in Pakistan can perform well with good feeding.

Saanen Goat Milk Production per Day

Dr. Nadir said that the breed of Saanen goats are known for their gentleness and high milk yield. So far in this research station, they have recorded the highest Saanen Goat milk production Per Day. This production of Saanen Breed Goat is 4.5 liters per day. On the other hand average daily milk production per goat is more than 3 liters.
He further informed that the average duration of milking in these goats is 240 days. Besides this, they have recorded the highest lactation period at 380 days in the Breed of Saanen Goats.

Distribution of Saanen Breed of Goat

Dr. Nadir Khan said that they have distributed 150 goats free of cost in Swat. These goats are also performing well with the local farmers. These goats have started giving birth to the farmers. Farmers feed them mostly tree leaves and green fodder. Even with this diet, the average production is more than 2 liters per day. Farmers can easily increase milk production with good feed. This shows that Saanen Goat in Pakistan can also perform on a small scale.

The department will distribute more Saanen breed goats ( سانن بکری ). This will not only fulfill the milk requirement of farmers but also improve employment. As the goats thrive, so do the hopes for the economic future of Swat Valley farmers.

Future Program for Saanen Breed of Goat

Dr. Nader Khan said they can spread the Saanen Breed of Goat all over Pakistan. They can also develop a semen production unit for Saanen Goats in Pakistan. Further, they can work on value addition in which other products including cheese and ice cream will be produced. For these initiatives, the Government should support the department.
