Hairy Swati Goat and Goat Cheese of Malakand

Hairy Swati Goat (سواتی بکری) is a famous breed of Malakand division which plays an important role in food production as well as employment of the local people. It is called Watani Goat by local people. Director of Livestock Upper Dir Dr. Hasan Khan expressed his views about Hairy Goat. He also told about the goat cheese of Malakand. This goat milk cheese is the tradition of this area.

In other areas of Malakand Division including Dir, Chitral, Malakand, Swat, Buner and Bajaur, these goats roam in herds with nomads, he added.

Characteristics of Hairy Goat

He said this breed of hairy goat got its name because of its long hairs. In the Malakand division, local people rear these goats as herds. Moreover, there are up to six hundred animals in a herd of Watani Goat .

He said it is a versatile breed which is important in terms of meat as well as milk production. Moreover, Its fur and skin are also of great importance. Furthermore, the long hairs on its skin add to its beauty. Moreover, Hairy Swati Goat has long ears and a conical nose.

He said the weight of an adult male goat of this breed is usually between 30 to 35 kg, while the weight of an adult female hairy goat is between 20 to 25 kg. The pregnancy rate is 90-95 percent in Hairy Swati Goat. Usually one child is born, but sometimes twins are born.

Milk Production and Goat Cheese

Regarding milk production, he said Swati goat gives 1.5-2.0 liters of milk per day. Moreover, its lactation period is up to 180 days. Milk is high in fat and protein. Moreover, its milk is used locally for goat cheese production. Shepherds traditionally milk it in the morning and evening.  They made goat milk cheese from it. Furthermore, they sell this goat cheese of Malakand in various markets of Malakand division.
