Role of Religion in Animal Welfare Society
A consultative meeting on the role of religion in building an animal welfare society was organized by the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore, Institute for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Brook Pakistan at a local hotel in Lahore.

The meeting was attended by Member Provincial Assembly Ayesha Iqbal, Vice Chancellor Veterinary University Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Honorary Secretary Institute for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Prof. Dr. Masood Rabbani, Advocacy Manager Brook Pakistan Syed Naeem Abbas and scholars from different schools of thought, faculty members of the Veterinary University, officers of the Livestock Department Punjab and representatives from Brook Pakistan and animal rights NGOs.
Speaking on the occasion, Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed said that the clinics of the Veterinary University and its disease diagnostic laboratories are providing medical facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases found in the animals/livestock of livestock farmers. Hundreds of pet lovers (cats, dogs, birds) are benefiting from the medical facilities provided in the university clinics on a daily basis.
He said that veterinary professionals are performing a great duty in the treatment of speechless animals.
He strongly condemned the outdated misunderstandings circulating on social media related to the treatment of animals.
Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed briefed the participants on the historical importance of the Veterinary University in the field of animal treatment and the recent initiatives of the Institute for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to prevent the proliferation of stray dogs. He said that the university has recently included the course of Animal Welfare in the curriculum of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
Earlier, Sharia Advisor to Ever Fresh Farm Mufti Asad Mahmood gave an informative lecture to the participants of the meeting.
He shed detailed light on the importance of Sharia guidance, the pleasure of Allah, the treatment of animals according to religious rules, appropriate and inappropriate behavior, the benefits of good food, the methods of slaughtering animals related to their welfare, feeding, health, milking, buying and selling, dehorning, killing and various Sharia aspects related to separating the baby from its mother.
On this occasion, Dr. Muhammad Sarwar Siddique also made a detailed statement on the rights of animals. Professor Dr. Masood Rabbani informed the participants about the recent initiatives of the Institute for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
In the meeting, Advocacy Manager Brooke Pakistan Muhammad Naeem discussed various aspects related to Brooke’s activities and animal welfare. The participants appreciated the organization of this consultative meeting.
