The International Journal of Infectious Diseases published a study of the success of the dog mediated Rabies Control Program in Pakistan. According to this study, the Rabies Free Pakistan Program has effectively reduced stray dog bite cases in Karachi. Moreover, these dog bite cases were reduced because of dogs vaccination along with stray dog population control. Furthermore, the study shows that over 200 stray dog bite cases are reported daily in Karachi. What is rabies, symptoms of rabies in human, canine rabies symptoms, this program also focuses on the awareness of rabies under one health approach. The Rabies Free Pakistan project also highlighted the importance of prevention of rabies.

According to this report, in 2022 Indus Hospital rabies prevention clinic treated over 9500 dog bite patients. Generally, people consider the overpopulation of stray dogs as a major problem in controlling rabies. So, the authorities do periodical dog culling campaigns for the Prevention of Rabies. Unfortunately, such campaigns do not result in long-term solutions. According to experts, strategic stray dog population control is the most effective way. This report from the International Journal of Infectious Diseases has also proved this. This report shows the success story of the pilot project of Dog mediated Rabies Free Pakistan.
What is Rabies?
What is rabies? This question raises the idea of dog bite. It also links the prevention of rabies. But Besides, dog mediated rabies, there are other causes also. Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of the body. Importantly, it has zoonotic importance, as it spreads to animals and people through saliva. It mainly affects the carnivores and bats, but all mammals can be affected. Besides affected animal bites, direct contact with open wounds or eyes and scratches also cause its spread. Moreover, it affects both domestic and wild animals.

After the appearance of symptoms, the disease becomes fatal. Domestic dogs and stray dog bite cases are the cause of this disease in up to 90% of cases. Asia and Africa are the most affected regions. 95% of deaths occur in the region.
Symptoms of Rabies in Human
The time of appearance of symptoms of rabies in human depends upon the site of bite or exposure. Furthermore, it also depends upon the load of virus. If it is closer to the head, symptoms will appear earlier. In the start, there is unusual tingling. There is also pain, fever, and sensation of burning at the wound. Symptoms of rabies in human become aggressive as the virus moves to the central nervous system.
In case of furious rabies, there will be hyperactivity, excited behavior, and lack of coordination. Fear of water and air is also included in Symptoms of rabies in human. However, death will occur in afar few days.

On the other hand, in the case of paralytic rabies, paralysis of muscles starts gradually from the site of a wound. Furthermore, it will lead to a coma slowly and ultimately death occurs. Such cases are up to 20% of human cases
Canine Rabies Symptoms
As stray dog bite cases have the primary importance, we should focus, on canine Rabies symptoms. Canine rabies symptoms include aggressive and restless behavior of the dog. Initially, the animal shows changed behavior. Furthermore, it becomes aggressive and bites different objects. Later paralysis occurs. Moreover, foaming around the mouth is another sign of canine rabies symptoms. Importantly, Hydrophobia is not seen in canine rabies symptoms. Symptoms of rabies in human includes hydrophobia.

Prevention of Rabies
Dogs vaccination including puppies is the most effective strategy for the Prevention of Rabies. Furthermore, stray dog population control program is also helpful. Education about dogs and dogs vaccination also works in this context. Awareness on what is rabies and symptoms of rabies in human is also important. Moreover, vaccination of people is also effective under one health. After exposure and before exposure, both options of immunization are available. Rabies Control Program
Rabies control program is the strategic way to control rabies. In this program, it is focused on reducing stray dog bite cases. For this propose dogs vaccination along with stray dog population control is implemented. TNVR is an effective strategy. This is based on the Trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release. This covers all aspects of the rabies control program. Awareness under One health is also important.

Rabies Control Program in Pakistan
Rabies Free Pakistan is the project of Indus Hospital. International Journal of Infectious Diseases has acknowledged this project. Besides, there are also other initiatives under one health. This program focused dog mediated rabies. Besides rabies vaccination, they also focused on the awareness of dog mediated rabies, to share What is rabies. The primary focus was the stray dog population control and dogs vaccination. The base of this program was the One Health approach under which all stakeholders collaborated. This program recommends 70% vaccination of the area which will produce herd immunity in dogs. The success story of this program is highlighted in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.
