“Rabies” is a Latin word which means madness. This condition reflects one of the prominent rabies symptoms besides others. Because of rabies virus or lyssavirus, rabies disease occurs.  This transmits to humans through dog bite or another animal. Word Rabies Day is observed on 28 September on the call of GARC in addition to other international organizations.

History of Disease

The history this disease is thousands of years old obviously. It is present in various texts of Egypt, Greece and India also. There have been many superstitions besides the misconceptions about this disease. In ancient times, people believed that other than dog or wolf bites; evil spirits or supernatural entities were too involved behind this disease.

However, even in the present era, more than 50000 people meet death due to this disease worldwide every year. This disease exists in almost all the countries of the world indeed except a few where they have controlled this. Asia in addition to Africa particularly are the areas where this disease is severe as about 95% of the cases are reported in these countries.

Causes of Rabies

This is actually a fatal zoonotic disease caused by a virus. The name of this virus is rabies virus and it is called lyssavirus because it belongs to the genus Lyssa. This virus enters the human body through the bite of a dog, cat or besides other rabid animal. Once inside, it multiplies and starts moving to the brain, which can take weeks to months. However, this aspect depends on which part of the body the wound is on and how deep it is.

Rabies Symptoms in Dogs and other Animals

The Rabies Symptoms in animals are different and these appear differently in different stages. Initial symptoms include changes in the animal’s behavior then fever, and drooling. The animal then tries to bite everything and the sound also changes. In the final stages, the animal becomes emaciated and finally dies. If you notice these symptoms in an animal, isolate it immediately and contact a veterinarian.

Rabies Symptoms in Humans

In humans, the rabies symptoms begin with fever, headache, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, etc. This is followed by changes in attitude, anger, drooling, restlessness, fear of water and light, sore throat, vomiting and finally death. Not every patient will have all of these symptoms. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap (especially lifebuoy) immediately after the bite. After that, take the patient to the hospital as soon as possible and give the doctor a complete history. The doctor will do his work according to the nature of the case.

Control and Treatment of Rabies

If we talk about getting rid of this disease, then the best solution is that animals, especially dogs, cats should be vaccinated in time. Measures at the government level are very important. In this regard a method like TNVR should be adopted to control the dog population instead of conventional methods. Besides all factors, the most important is vaccination of dogs. Apart from this, government should available the emergency facilities at hospitals.

”ریبیز” لاطینی زبان کا لفظ ہے جس کا مطلب پاگل پن یا غصہ ہے۔ یہ کیفیت اس بیماری کی نمایاں علامات میں سے ایک کی عکاسی کرتی ہے۔ اس بیماری کی تاریخ ہزاروں سال پرانی ہے اور اس کا تذکرہ مصر، یونان اور ہندوستان کی مختلف تحریروں میں ملتا ہے۔
اس بیماری کو لے کر بہت سی توہمات پرستیاں اور غلط فہمیاں بھی رہی ہیں۔ زمانہ قدیم میں یہ بھی خیال کیا جاتا تھا کہ اس بیماری کے پیچھے کتے یا بھیڑیے کے کاٹنے کے علاوہ بری روحیں یا مافوق الفطرت چیزیں بھی شامل ہیں۔
موجودہ دور میں بھی ہر سال تقریبا 50000 سے زائد لوگ دنیا بھر میں اس بیماری کی وجہ سے مر رہے ہیں کیونکہ یہ بیماری تقریباََ دنیا کے تمام ممالک میں پائی جاتی ہے ماسوائے چند مثلا انٹارکٹکا، آسٹریلیا اور امریکہ کے جہاں اس بیماری پر قابو پایا جاچکا ہے۔ اس بیماری  سے سب سے زیادہ متاثر ہونے والے ممالک میں ایشیاء اور افریقہ پہلے نمبر پر ہیں کیونکہ تقریباََ 95 فیصد کیسسز ان ممالک میں رپورٹ ہوتے ہیں۔

ریبیز وائرس اور بیماری کی منتقلی

یہ درحقیقت ایک مہلک زونوٹک (جانوروں سے انسان میں منتقل ہونے والی) بیماری ہے جوکہ وائرس کی وجہ سے ہوتی ہے۔
اس وائرس کا نام ریبیز وائرس ہے اور اسے بعض اوقات لیسا وائرس بھی کہا جاتا ہے کیونکہ اس کا تعلق جینس لیسا سے ہے۔ یہ وائرس انسانی جسم میں کتے، بلی یا کسی اور پاگل جانور کے کاٹنے سے داخل ہوتا ہے۔ داخل ہونے کے بعد یہ اپنی تعداد بڑھاتا ہے اور دماغ کی طرف جانا شروع کردیتا ہے جس کیلئے اسے ہفتوں سے مہینے لگ سکتے ہیں۔ اس پہلو کا انحصار اس بات پر ہے کہ زخم جسم کے کس حصے پر ہے اور کتنا گہرا ہے۔

جانوروں میں ریبیز کی علامات

جانوروں میں اس بیماری کی علامات مختلف ہیں جوکہ مختلف مراحل میں ظاہر ہوتی ہیں۔ شروع میں جانور کا رویہ تبدیل ہونا، بخار اور منہ سے رال کا ٹپکنا وغیرہ شامل ہیں۔ اس کے بعد جانور ہر چیز کو کاٹنے کی کوشش کرتا ہے اور آواز بھی تبدیل ہو جاتی ہے۔ آخری مراحل میں جانور کو لقوا، قوما اور موت واقع ہوجاتی ہے۔ اگر آپ کسی جانور میں یہ علامات دیکھیں تو اس کو فوری طور پر الگ کریں اور جانوروں کے ڈاکٹر (ویٹرنری ڈاکٹر) سے رابطہ کریں۔

انسانوں میں ریبیز کی علامات

انسانوں میں اس بیماری کی علامات بخار، سر درد، قے، تھکاوٹ بھوک کا نہ لگنا وغیرہ سے شروع ہوتی ہیں۔ اس کے بعد رویہ میں تبدیلی، غصہ، منہ سے رال ٹپکنا، بے چینی، پانی اور روشنی کا ڈر، گلے کا لقوا، قوما اور بالآخر موت۔ لازمی نہیں ہے کہ ہر مریض میں یہ ساری علامات ظاہر ہوں۔کاٹنے کے فوراََ بعد زخم کو اچھی طرح صابن (بالخصوص لائف بوائے) سے دھوئیں۔ اس کے بعد جتنا جلدی ہو سکے مریض کو ہسپتال لے کر جائیں اور ڈاکٹر کو مکمل بات(ہسٹری) بتائیں۔ ڈاکٹر کیس کی نوعیت کے مطابق اپنا کام کرے گا۔

ریبیز کا علاج اور اس پر کنٹرول

اگر اس بیماری سے نجات کی بات کی جائے تو اس کا بہترین حل یہی ہے کہ جانوروں بالخصوص کتے، بلیوں کو بروقت ویکسی نیشن کروائی جائے۔ سٹرے (آوارہ) کتوں کی مناسب روک تھام کیلئے حکومتی سطح پر اقدامات انتہائی اہم ہیں۔ اس حوالے سے TNVR جیسے طریقے کو اپنانا چاہئے تاکہ بغیر کسی تکلیف کے کتوں کی آبادی پر قابو پایا جا سکے۔
