Promotion of Investment in Livestock and Agriculture, Meeting held in Lahore
An important meeting was held in Lahore under the chairmanship of Provincial Minister for Livestock Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani. It was regarding the promotion of investment in livestock value addition and value chain and the agriculture sector. Secretary Livestock Ahmed Aziz Tarar, Secretary Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahi and important stakeholders from the government and private sectors attended the meeting.
Issues Discussed on Investment in Livestock
During the meeting, various issues were discussed in detail for the development and economic improvement of the agriculture and livestock sectors. It covered value addition in products, making the wheat procurement system effective, promotion of modern agricultural machinery and technology, and opportunities for financial assistance for farm mechanization.

Emphasis was placed on the development of a cold chain system to maintain the quality of products and reduce waste in the livestock sector. Priority was given to the establishment of FMD-free compartments for disease control and promotion of exports. On this occasion, it was informed that eight foot-and-mouth disease control compartments have been notified in Punjab, which will be helpful in accessing international markets.
Initiatives for Livestock Development
On this occasion, the provincial minister said that under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, projects worth billions of rupees have been launched for farmers. Livestock Department is working on the herd improvement of animals through herd transformation programs. Under this program, 2 million sexed semen of high-breed Brahman and Friesian is being provided annually at subsidized rates and genetic improvement is also being promoted in the local breed.

He said that chilling units will be introduced soon under farm mechanization, which will facilitate value addition and safe storage of milk and meat. Work is also underway to establish biogas plants. The budget of the Livestock Department is 30 billion, while the budget of the Agriculture Department has reached close to 100 billion, which will be further increased.
The provincial minister, mentioning the challenges faced by the Agriculture and Livestock Department, said that the Punjab Chief Minister stands with the farmers and effective steps are being taken to reduce taxes so as to promote the industry.

At the end of the meeting, a determination was expressed that by developing these sectors on modern lines, productivity, sustainable development, and stability of the country’s economy would be ensured.
