Prof. Talat Pahsa conferred with Hilal-i-Imtiaz by President Alvi

In recognition of his valuable services in the field of education, research, development and community work, Professor Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha was conferred with the civil award Hilal-e-Imtiaz on March 23.

Professor Talat Naseer Pasha has over forty years of experience in teaching, research, administration and development activities. Earlier, he served two terms as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore. In addition, he was the founding Vice Chancellor of Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bahawalpur.

Previous National Awards

Professor Pasha was also conferred with the Sitara-e-Imtiaz civil award in 2016. In recognition of his teaching excellence, he received the Best University Teacher Award 2009 from the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

UVAS Achieved International Recognition

During Prof. Dr. Pasha’s tenure, the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore (UVAS) secured the first position among Pakistani universities and 101-200 position among the top universities in the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020.

Prof. Pasha established Pakistan’s first Veterinary Academy at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College London.

He has completed 8 development projects worth over Rs. 7.5 billion under the auspices of the Government of Punjab and HEC during the last 8 years. These projects have increased access to and quality of educational, research and training facilities for farming communities and related industries and have helped in value addition and export of livestock products.

Establishment of Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences

Prof. Dr. Talat Pasha had the additional charge of Vice Chancellor of Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Bahawalpur. He established the university with the approval of KPC-I at a cost of Rs. 3.3 billion.

The university started classes after acquiring 1,000 acres of land for infrastructure development, faculty management and approval from the Higher Education Commission and Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council. The university is catering to the training needs of farmers and youth along with teaching and research in veterinary and animal sciences in South Punjab.

Policy Research and Dairy Sector Development

In 2016, Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha established the Center of Applied Policy Research for Livestock with funding from USAID. The center is supporting the government and stakeholders through research-based policy papers and has published more than twenty papers.

He received funding from USDA in 2017 for innovation in Pakistan’s dairy sector through capacity building of faculty, farmers and students. Under this project, a Dairy Research Demonstration and Training Center was established at the Ravi Campus of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pattoki, for which Holstein cows were imported from the United States.

1800 farmers and 300 students as well as faculty members were trained in this training center. Further, professional services were provided to 80 farms in Punjab while more than 3000 farmers visited the facility. This encouraged innovation in dairy farming and provided an opportunity for dairy professionals to learn.

Farmer Welfare and Extension Services

Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha also launched public welfare activities around the Ravi Campus of the Veterinary University, Pattoki. 1500 farmers were registered for training in seven districts of Punjab and Sindh and were linked to the market under the Pak-Australian Dairy Project.

A 24/7 extension services project was implemented to provide services at the doorstep of farmers, along with the establishment of Dairy Club, Poultry Club and Aqua Club to provide opportunities for all stakeholders to come together.

Research Contributions

Professor Pasha focused his research on the poultry and dairy industry. His seminal research work on mineral mapping of canal irrigated districts of Punjab helped the feed industry to prepare mineral supplements as per the needs of specific areas.

Contributions as Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Lahore

As Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Lahore, Professor Pasha established 32 new science and education labs, 7 computer labs and 3 botanical gardens along with the launch of three new faculties of the university.

Another 25 new MPhil and 9 PhD programmes were started.

The School Milk Program was launched in 2021 for over 9,000 students from 90 schools in Sheikhupura and Attock districts, with the support of the dairy industry.
