Seminar on Disease Control through Farm Biosecurity held at Arid University

Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, PMAS Barani University of Agriculture Rawalpindi and National Rural Support Program (NRSP) in collaboration with the National Rural Support Program (NRSP) organized an awareness seminar for farmers on prevention of lumpy skin disease and other diseases through farm biosecurity. The title was Disease Control through Farm Biosecurity.

The special guest of the seminar was Regional Program Officer National Rural Support Program Islamabad Muhammad Eidul Niazi. The seminar was attended by Dean Faculty Professor Dr. Irfan Yousuf, Chief Organizer Dr. Nayab Danish, Chairperson Islamic Animal Hybrid Biology Department Dr. Murtaza Ahsan Muhammad, Dr. Mehreen Zahra and Jamil Akbar, along with farmers, researchers and students.

 

Biosecurity and Prevention of Lumpy Skin Disease

In his address, Muhammad Eidul Niazi said that a proper study should be conducted on lumpy skin disease, which includes data collection and sampling from the field and diagnostic investigations in laboratories. He explained the ways to protect livestock from this disease and said that animal owners and veterinary experts should work together to spread awareness.

Professor Dr. Irfan Yousaf said in his address that in terms of health, humans, animals and the environment are closely related. Many diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans, which is why there is a discussion about protecting the health of animals and humans together all over the world. He said that farmers should take care of their own health along with the health of animals and should avoid diseases like Glucobanovirus (LSD) that can be transmitted to humans.

Role of NRSP

The speakers said that NRSP is the largest rural assistance program in the country and is currently working with 3.74 million poor households in a network of 241,072 community organizations. This institution is playing an important role for sustainable development and improvement of livestock in the rural areas.

The seminar discussed the internal and external karmas of animals. Experts said that by controlling parasites, animals can be kept healthy and diseases spread through them can be prevented.

Zoonotic Diseases and Disease Control

Assistant Professor Department of Zoology Dr. Ayesha Mohiuddin shed detailed light on zoonotic diseases transmitted from animals to humans and methods of preventing them. She said that these diseases cause livestock losses in poor communities and affect the rural economy.

Dr. Asghar Khan (Clinical Medicine) emphasized on the spread of infectious diseases and strict measures of farm biosecurity so that the disease is not transmitted from one animal to another.

At the end of the seminar, certificates were distributed among the participants and farmers by the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and a commitment was expressed to continue such sessions for the betterment of livestock.
