Brucellosis in Animals
Brucellosis is a serious animal disease caused by a dangerous bacterium, which is also of economic importance. The losses caused by this disease in livestock farming cause major economic losses. Due to this disease, livestock have to suffer significant economic losses, mainly in which abortion is the biggest problem in female animals. Along with this, this disease adversely affects reproductive abilities, which severely affects the animals as well as farmers.
Brucellosis is also important in that it causes abortion in female animals, while male animals are also affected by it. This disease is transmitted from one infected animal to another, but rather its virus or germs are spread to other animals through the milk, urine, and fluids released during birth of a pregnant animal.
Zoonotic Importance of Zoonosis
It is a zoonotic disease, that is, a disease transmitted from animals to humans, which is a major threat to public health. The disease can be transmitted to humans through consumption of raw milk, direct contact with an infected animal, or during handling of meat, etc.
Importance of diagnosis of Brucellosis and modern techniques
Experts say that accurate and timely diagnosis of this disease is very important. In the past, traditional and expensive methods were used to diagnose it, which took a lot of time to get the results. However, the Department of Pathology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore, has found a cheap and easy solution.
Brucellosis Diagnostic Kit of UVAS
During the workshop, experts said that now a new and easy diagnosis technique has been introduced, which is available in the form of a diagnostic kit or strip. This method is not only cheap but can confirm brucellosis in humans and animals in a very easy way under field conditions. Thanks to this test, farmers and veterinary officers can detect the disease within minutes by taking a sample of the animal’s blood or milk on the spot.
This method can be a game changer for a developing country like Pakistan, where laboratory facilities are not easily available in remote rural areas. The kit will help the government and the livestock department formulate a strategy to control the disease.
Brucellosis in Humans and Zoonosis
The experts further said that brucellosis causes chronic fever, joint pain, and muscle weakness in humans. The symptoms of this disease in humans are sometimes similar to malaria or typhoid, due to which it is often misdiagnosed. Therefore, the utility of this kit in the field of public health is also very high. At the end of the workshop, certificates and commemorative shields were also distributed among the participants.
