Dr. Raheela Akhtar has been promoted as the first female professor in the Department of Pathology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore. At the age of forty-nine, she became one of the youngest professors. She joined the Department of Pathology as a Teaching Assistant in 2005 and has 18 years of teaching and research experience.
Outstanding Academic Journey of Dr. Raheela Akhtar
Young Professor Dr. Raheela Akhtar has been a merit scholarship holder throughout her academic career. She received a silver medal in DVM, a silver medal in MPhil and a gold medal from the Society of Physiology, UVAS.
She was the first woman in a veterinary university to receive a local HEC scholarship for PhD. Later, she also received an HEC-IRSIP scholarship for PhD research at the University of Michigan, USA. It should be noted that this university was among the top ten universities in the world at that time. She completed her PhD at the young age of 28.
Research Achievements and International Recognition
Dr. Raheela has been an Associate Member of the Royal Society of Veterinary Pathologists, UK, since 2019.
She was the first Pakistani to win the first position and a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 for presenting the best research proposal in the All Pakistan Pitching Research Competition 2018 organized by the University of Queensland, Australia.
She developed a diagnostic strip for the rapid diagnosis of Brucella and Mycobacterium. This was the first product of the veterinary university for which a patent application was filed.
Scientific Contributions of Dr. Raheela Akhtar
Dr. Raheela Akhtar has presented her research work in seven different countries. She was the first researcher from India to win the GP Sen Young Scientist Award in 2008.
As a Principal Investigator, she has successfully completed four research projects worth about Rs. 15 million funded by various agencies.
She has 56 international and national impact factor publications and is also serving as a reviewer and editorial board member for various national and international impact factor journals.
