The Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) is the Chief Vet of any country. Besides animal health and other veterinary matters, he is responsible for veterinary certification.  Moreover, he also deals the public health concerns related to veterinary issues including zoonosis. The Animal Husbandry Commissioner of Pakistan is the Chief Vet in Pakistan. On the other hand, this term is also the part of Punjab Animal Health Act 2019. Furthermore, a law under process is going to establish the Federal Veterinary Office. It will also establish Provincial Veterinary Office and Veterinary Technical Committee.

Chief Veterinary Officer and Federal Proposed Bill

The National Animal Health, Welfare, and Public Health Bill is under process. Through this legislation, the Livestock Wing of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research will be considered as the “Federal Veterinary Office”. On the other hand, the Provincial Livestock Department will perform the duties of the “Provincial Veterinary Office”. Under this proposed law, the Animal Husbandry Commissioner will be the “Chief Veterinary Officer of Pakistan”. On the other side, the Director General or Director of the Provincial Livestock Department will perform the duties of “Provincial Chief Veterinary Officer”.

Besides this, a “Veterinary Technical Committee” will provide the forum for the Interprovincial Coordination, under this proposed law. CVO Pakistan will chair this committee.

CVO Punjab – Act and Rules

Besides this legislation, the term of Chief Veterinary Officer already exists under the Punjab Animal Health Act 2019. Under this act, Govt. of Punjab notified DG Livestock Extension as CVO Punjab. Furthermore, Under this act, the Government notifies the Disease Free Area or Disease Eradication Area.
