History of International Cheetah Day
This International Cheetah Day was established in 2010 by the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). This is an organization founded by the notable conservationist Dr. Laurie Marker.
December 4th, World Cheetah Day marks the birthday of Khayam Cheetah. Dr. Laurie Marker raised Khayam cheetah from a cub at Wildlife Safari in Oregon. Khayam Cheetah was specially trained for the world’s first rewilding research project. Under this project, a captive-raised cheetah was trained for hunting in the wild. In 1977, Dr. Marker took Khayam to Africa for this project. After completion of the training, Dr. Marker brought Khayam Cheetah back to the United States.
During her time in Namibia, Dr. Marker discovered that farmers were killing cheetahs in large numbers. They considered these animals threats to their livestock. This situation inspired her dedication to the preservation of cheetahs.
Dr. Marker also established the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) in 1990 which became a global leader for cheetah conservation. This foundation leads World Cheetah Day.
Cheetah Characteristics
Cheetahs belong to the genus Acinonyx and the family Felidae. They are known as the world’s fastest land animals. They are capable of reaching speeds up to 112 km/h in short bursts, typically covering 200–300 meters. This fastest speed s among the main Cheetah Characteristics.
Adult Cheetahs have a slim, lightweight body. Its average weight is 34–64 kg. They have large nostrils that enhance oxygen intake. They also have large lungs and heart. Cheetah habitat includes savannas, grasslands, and semi-desert areas. In Africa, the largest Cheetah population is located in countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, and South Africa. They were also found in North Africa and parts of the Middle East. However due to urbanization and habitat loss, their area and cheetah population are reduced.
Cheetah Conservation Status, Population, and Cheetah Day
They are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. The Asiatic cheetah, found in Iran, is Critically Endangered. These are 50 individuals surviving in fragmented desert habitats. The Northwest African cheetah, found in parts of Algeria, Niger, and Mali, is also Critically Endangered. Recent estimates suggest that the global cheetah is around 7,000. Cheetah habitat loss is a major factor behind this decline.
Human population with livestock expansion is a major threat to the cheetah population. Famers kill cheetahs due to their attack on livestock. The Livestock Guarding Dog (LGD) program is one of the Cheetah Conservation Fund’s (CCF) most successful initiatives.
