World Wildlife Conservation Day and its History 

World Wildlife Conservation Day is observed annually on December 4th. This day is celebrated to raise awareness about the need for wildlife protection and wildlife habitats. It also highlights the critical importance of wildlife conservation. Protection of wildlife from threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and illegal wildlife trade is also focused on this day.  History of World Wildlife Conservation Day links to Hillary Clinton. History of World Wildlife Conservation Day

World Wildlife Conservation Day was started in 2012 by the United States Department of State.  US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in 2012, issued a call to action on Wildlife protection and conservation. She announced it at the “Wildlife Trafficking and Conservation: A Call to Action” event on November 8, 2012. At this event, she unveiled the White House’s comprehensive strategy for the conservation of wildlife. It was informed that the annual value of global wildlife trafficking and illegal trade is $7 to $10 billion.

Hillary Clinton said;

Wildlife cannot be manufactured. And once it’s gone, it cannot be replenished. Those who profit from it illegally are not just undermining our borders and our economies; they are truly stealing from the next generation.”

Objectives of World Wildlife Conservation Day

The objective of the day was to raise awareness and support international laws and conventions on the conservation of wildlife. This day supports the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), an international law to protect endangered species. Moreover, this day also focuses on the protection of tigers, elephants, rhinos, pangolins, and other iconic wild species. This day also unites individuals, organizations, and governments in their efforts to protect biodiversity and promote conservation initiatives.

Conservation of wildlife plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem balance. It focuses on the survival of wildlife species with humans. The protection of animals and plants and their habitats is important for a healthy ecosystem. Extinction of any species disturbers the balance of the ecosystem and it ultimately affects humans.

The various wildlife species within the ecosystem interact with each other to support food webs and life. When any species is threatened or removed from its natural habitat, it causes negative effects across the entire ecosystem.
