History of CEBG

The Centre of Excellence for Bovine Genetics (CEBG) is a specialized semen and embryo production unit of the Remount Veterinary & Farms Corps (RV&FC), Pakistan Army. The center was established through the collaboration of RV&FC, the Planning Commission of Pakistan, and the Livestock & Dairy Development Department to strengthen livestock genetics and enhance dairy and beef production across the country.

Since 2011, CEBG has been working as an independent unit of the Pakistan Army, providing nationwide services aimed at improving milk and meat production through genetically superior cattle and buffalo breeds. By introducing advanced reproductive technologies and modern genetic improvement programs, the center supports farmers and the livestock industry in achieving higher productivity and better-quality animals.

Organizational Structure of CEBG

The Centre of Excellence for Bovine Genetics operates through multiple specialized wings that focus on different aspects of bovine genetic improvement and farmer support services.

 

CEBG Semen Production Wing

This wing is responsible for the production and processing of high-quality semen from genetically superior bulls. It ensures strict quality control and follows internationally recognized standards in semen production.

CEBG Embryo Production Wing

The embryo production wing focuses on advanced reproductive technologies, particularly embryo production and embryo transfer, to rapidly multiply elite bovine genetics.

Field Wing

The field wing works directly with farmers and livestock farms across the country. It provides technical services, reproductive support, and facilitates the use of improved genetics in the field.

Artificial Insemination & Embryo Transfer Training Centre (AETC)

This training center develops skilled manpower by training veterinarians, technicians, and livestock professionals in artificial insemination and embryo transfer technologies.

Controlled Freezing and Quality Assurance

Semen straws are frozen using a digital programmable freezer, which ensures precise freezing conditions based on computerized protocols. CEBG uses imported, commercially prepared semen extenders, and strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed throughout the production process to maintain the highest quality standards.

The fertility ratio of CEBG semen is above 70 percent, and the milk production capacity of the dams exceeds 40 liters per day, which ensures superior genetic potential for dairy herds.

 

Selection of Genetically Elite Bulls

CEBG does not compromise on the selection of genetically elite bulls. All available bulls are the progeny of elite embryos or proven bulls and are registered with the Livestock Breeding Services Authority (LBSA), Punjab.

 

CEBG Embryo Transfer Wing

Since 1996, CEBG has been one of Pakistan’s pioneer institutions working on bovine embryo technologies. The embryo transfer wing enables farmers to access genetically superior embryos of Friesian, crossbred, and beef breeds.

In addition to embryo production, CEBG also provides technical assistance and services for embryo transfer, helping farmers adopt advanced reproductive technologies to improve herd genetics in a shorter period.

 

What is In-Vitro Embryo Production (IVEP)?

An embryo is the early stage of an unborn offspring that develops in the female reproductive tract after the egg (ovum) is fertilized by sperm. It can only be observed under a microscope during its early stages.

In Vitro Embryo Production (IVEP) is an advanced reproductive technology in which ova are collected from the ovaries of elite cows and fertilized with superior semen in a laboratory environment. This process is conducted in the state-of-the-art CEBG IVEP laboratory, following the latest research and technological protocols.

Using IVEP technology, hundreds of embryos can be produced from a single elite cow. These embryos can then be transferred into the uterus of recipient cows approximately seven days after heat, allowing the production of high-genetic-value offspring even from non-descript cows.

Purpose of IVEP Technology

Embryo transfer technology significantly accelerates the production of genetically superior animals. Through this method, farmers can develop elite-class livestock within a minimum possible time frame.

Animals produced through embryo transfer inherit the genetic potential of their parents, which means that the genetic progress that normally takes 12 to 15 years through conventional Artificial Insemination (AI) can be achieved in approximately three years using embryo transfer technology.

This technology therefore plays a crucial role in rapidly improving dairy and beef genetics, ultimately contributing to increased milk and meat production in Pakistan.
