
Animal Husbandry Commissioner – Livestock Wing of MNFSR
Livestock Wing and Animal Husbandry Commissioner work under the Ministry of National Food Security and Research. The focus of this ministry is to ensure food security in Pakistan. Its main role is policy formulation, planning, and economic coordination in the agriculture sector. Livestock is an important part of agriculture and it contributes more than 60% to the agriculture GDP. So, among other departments, the Livestock Wing is the important technical wing under this ministry. Animal Husbandry Commissioner of Pakistan (AHC) is the most important position under the Livestock Wing. AHC is the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Pakistan.
Livestock Wing
The main task of the Livestock Wing under MNFSR is the formulation of policies, strategies, and programs to enhance the livestock production of the livestock sector. It is the primary regulatory authority for animal health, production, and welfare in Pakistan. This wing also addresses issues such as animal disease prevention, and livestock export facilitation.
Animal Husbandry Commissioner (AHC)
The Animal Husbandry Commissioner of Pakistan is the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of Pakistan. It oversees the development and execution of national strategies related to livestock and animal health. Under the Livestock Wing of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the Animal Husbandry Commissioner, along with the Deputy Animal Husbandry Commissioner of Pakistan, Assistant Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Research Officers, and other staff deal with technical matters related to the livestock sector.

- Addresses inter-provincial challenges related to animal health and trade.
Disease Control and Prevention
- Coordinates to monitor, control, and eradicate animal diseases including transboundary animal diseases
- Oversees vaccination campaigns and biosecurity measures.
Disease Surveillance and Reporting
- Coordinate disease surveillance system at the national level
- Prepares and submits national disease reports to international bodies.
Capacity Building and Research
- Promotes research and innovation in livestock production and health.
- Conducts training programs for veterinary professionals and farmers.
Veterinary Public Health
- Coordinates with concerned authorities to manage zoonotic disease risks to safeguard human health.
- Supports initiatives to ensure the safety of animal-derived food products.
Export Facilitation and Private Sector Development
- Ensures compliance with international animal health standards to promote the export of livestock and related products.
- Coordinate with the private sector to promote value addition and diversification in livestock products
