Animal Quarantine Department of Pakistan
The Animal Quarantine Department (AQD) of Pakistan works under the Ministry of National Food Security and Research. It is the most important department with respect to the animals and animal products trade. The Animal Quarantine Office addresses and other information are given here.
AQD protects animal health and public health by safeguarding the borders against trans-boundary animal diseases and Zoonotic diseases. It monitors the entry and exit points of animals and animal products and ensures animal health compliance with international trade standards and local laws. Animal Quarantine Department also facilitates the animal products establishments for international trade compliance.
History of Animal Quarantine Department
Animal Quinine Department was established in 1980 with its first station in Karachi. It became the attached department of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock in 1987. From 2008 to 2011, it remained a part of the Ministry of Livestock & Dairy Development. In 2011, it also temporarily worked under the Ministry of Commerce. Since October 2011, it is part of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research with its more than seven stations in different parts of the country.
Objectives of the Animal Quarantine Department
- To Safeguard points of entry and exit against transboundary animal diseases and Zoonotic diseases to facilitate a healthy animal production system.
- To ensure compliance with Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards under the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements and to facilities animals and animal products trade.
- Minimizing the risks associated with diseases of public health significance.
Services offered by the Animal Quarantine Department
AQD offers a range of inspection and certification services to importers and exporters of animals and animal products. These services of AQD include:
Import and Export Clearance:
- Health certificates for export and import of animals and animal products.
- Inspection and approval of quarantine facilities.
- Risk Assessment of animals and animal products import
Registration of Animal Production Facilities:
- Registration and Certification for slaughterhouses, casing units, bone processing units, poultry product establishments, and other animal products related facilities.
Technical Support:
- Training and advisory services for stakeholders for ease of doing business
Significance of AQD
The Animal Quarantine Department is a highly significant department of Pakistan both with respect to public health and the national economy. Its activities ensure the healthy animals in Pakistan which results in quality animal products and safe human-animal interactions. The department’s role in the economy is also highly significant as it directly deals with the animals and animal products export including meat, milk, honey, and poultry products.
