World Gorilla Day | Gorilla Conservation and Characteristics of Gorilla

World Gorilla Day is an annual event celebrated on 24th September. This day aims to take global action for Gorilla Conservation. More importantly, this day educates people to take action to protect Gorillas in the wild. It also aims to highlight the threats gorillas face, such as habitat destruction, poaching, and diseases like Ebola. Characteristics of Gorilla have also been discussed here.

Moreover, this day encourages people to learn about gorillas and support gorilla conservation organizations. It will help to preserve gorilla habitats in Central Africa. There are two main species of gorillas: the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla, both critically endangered.

History of World Gorilla Day

World Gorilla Day was first celebrated on September 24, 2017. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International was founded on this day in collaboration with other conservation organizations. It also marked the 50th anniversary of the Karisoke Research Center, which was established by renowned primatologist Dian Fossey in 1967. This research center is operated by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

Fossey’s pioneering work in the mountains of Rwanda helped bring global attention to the plight of gorillas, particularly the endangered mountain Gorillas. However, her research and advocacy were instrumental in shaping modern conservation efforts for these great apes. Her focus, courage, and passion have inspired many conservationists for gorilla conservation efforts. On the other hand, Dian Fossey’s book, Gorillas in the Mist, was published in 1983. This book brought worldwide attention to the plight of mountain gorillas and her efforts to protect them.

Characteristics of Gorillas

Gorillas belong to the genus Gorilla and family Hominidae. The genus gorilla is divided into two species, the eastern gorilla and the western gorilla. Moreover, it is divided into four subspecies Western Lowland Gorilla, Cross River Gorilla, Mountain Gorilla, and Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Grauer’s Gorilla). Furthermore, they are the largest of all primates. Characteristics of Gorilla are as follows.

They have thick, coarse fur that ranges from dark brown to black. Adult male gorillas can weigh between 300 to 485 pounds (135 to 220 kg) and females are smaller, typically weighing around 150 to 250 pounds (68 to 113 kg). Moreover, they have long, powerful arms and short, stocky legs with an extremely thick, strong chest; and a protruding abdomen.

Their stomach is larger than their chest. Due to this, they have a distinctive body shape. Moreover, their stomach size is attributed to their enlarged intestines. Therefore, they can digest the bulky fibrous vegetation they consume. On the other hand, they have a flat nose, large nostrils, and expressive eyes.

Gorillas live in troops led by one or two silverback males. Adult males have a prominent crest on top of the skull and a “saddle” of gray or silver hairs on the lower part of the back and called “silverback.” They are primarily herbivores and eat leaves, stalks, and shoots.

Distribution and Habitat of Gorillas

They are native to the forests of Central and East Africa. Their habitat includes tropical rainforests, montane forests, and lowland swamps. Furthermore, they primarily reside in countries like Rwanda, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon.

Gorilla Conservation Status and World Gorilla Day

All species and subspecies of gorilla are listed as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. However, the Conservation efforts focus on protecting gorilla populations, preserving their natural habitats, and addressing the threats they face. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International focuses on the conservation of mountain gorillas, conducting research, anti-poaching patrols, and community development.

In addition, the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP), a coalition of the WWF, Fauna & Flora International, and Conservation International, focused to ensure the conservation of mountain gorillas and their regional afromontane forest habitat in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. World Gorilla Day Gorilla Day raises awareness for Gorilla Conservation.
