A research by Dr. Muhammad Rashid, MPhil scholar of the Department of Pathology, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, has been revealed regarding the treatment of E. coli disease in poultry and reducing the problems of antibiotic resistance. The research has found immense benefits of mint and moringa (Suhanjana) leaves.
E. coli in Poultry
Dr. Muhammad Rashid says that E. coli bacteria is one of the few major problems facing the poultry industry. The disease caused by this bacteria and the antibiotics used to treat it not only cause economic losses for farmers but also create problems of antibiotic resistance.
Use of Mint and Moringa in E. coli Treatment in Poultry
He said that according to a research conducted at the Pathology Department of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore, a solution made of Mentha spicata (mint) and Moringa oleifera (suhanjana) leaves (powder) in water helps in the prevention and treatment of E. coli disease and in addition, it has a positive effect on the health of the chicken along with increasing its weight.
He further said that for this purpose, 120 day-old chicks were taken from a well-known hatchery in Lahore and kept in 6 groups for a period of 30 days. In these groups, the effects of Mentha spicata (mint) and Moringa oleifera (suhanjana) separately and together against E. coli disease were observed.
Effects of Moringa and Mint on Poultry Production
Dr. Muhammad Rashid says that in this research, other aspects including FCR, mortality rate, gross pathology and histopathology were also taken into account before and after infection. He said that the final results of this study were very impressive and welcome.
Dr. Rashid said that the poultry industry is providing quality and affordable protein in the form of meat and eggs worldwide. Commercial poultry production is helping to reduce the problems of malnutrition worldwide. There can be no alternative to broiler chicken because it is not only prepared in a short time but is also an important profitable business that directly and indirectly employs thousands of people. Furthermore, in the current era, due to the increasing population, only broiler chicken can meet the meat consumption.
Recommendations for E. coli Treatment in Poultry
Dr. Rashid has recommended that poultry farmers can reduce the problems of E. coli by adding appropriate amounts of mint and moringa leaf powder to water and improve production. This will not only bring economic benefits but will also solve the problem of antibiotic resistance and promote organic poultry.
Dr. Rashid thanked Dr. Muhammad Saeed Imran, Professor Dr. Asim Aslam and others for their support and special guidance in this research.
