Kashmir, new Pakistan political map and Politics

Coumn By Dr. Jassar Aftab. Pakistan’s new map is, of course, a Pakistan political map, and its importance lies primarily in international politics. Unfortunately, instead of discussing its diplomatic significance, it became the subject of domestic political point-scoring, where different groups attempted to use it for their own political interests.

Kashmir Cannot Be Solved Through Extremes

Neither is it realistic to believe that Kashmir can be made part of Pakistan through military force, nor is it appropriate to remain silent, accept the status quo, and leave the people of Kashmir to their fate.

Where force is met with force, destruction follows. However, the ability to respond to aggression remains an important element of national security and deterrence. Pakistan has consistently maintained that while it seeks peace, peace should never be mistaken for weakness. Whenever circumstances have demanded a response, Pakistan has responded according to its capabilities.

The Importance of Diplomatic Engagement

The real battlefield for Kashmir is diplomacy. The issue must continue to be presented effectively before the United Nations, through international diplomacy, global media, and Pakistan’s diplomatic missions. The objective is to keep the Kashmir issue alive internationally while ensuring that future generations also understand its historical and political background.

The world must continue to be informed about Kashmir, the people of Kashmir, the nature of the dispute, developments in the region, and Pakistan’s position. At the same time, it should be made clear that Pakistan’s official position on Kashmir has remained consistent.

Pakistan’s Position Has Remained Consistent

Pakistan’s official position on Kashmir has remained fundamentally unchanged since independence.

What has varied over the decades is the style and intensity with which different governments have presented the issue internationally. Since Pakistan maintains that the dispute should be resolved in accordance with United Nations resolutions, there is always room to debate how effectively different governments have pursued the Kashmir issue through diplomatic channels.

The New Pakistan political map Is Symbolic, Not a Final Solution

Releasing a patriotic song or issuing a new political map does not, by itself, resolve the Kashmir dispute. However, such symbolic measures should not be dismissed as entirely insignificant.

Their value lies in reinforcing Pakistan’s diplomatic position and communicating that position consistently to both domestic and international audiences.

The Symbolic Importance of the Pakistan Political Map

The new political map conveys a symbolic message that Pakistan’s position today remains the same as it was more than seventy years ago.

It reflects the view that Pakistan continues to maintain the same stance regarding Kashmir, while many Kashmiris continue to seek a resolution to the dispute. According to this perspective, the situation in Kashmir remains unresolved and continues to require international attention.

Domestic Political Reactions

Internationally, the release of the new political map attracted attention. Within Pakistan, however, different political groups interpreted it differently.

Some presented the map as a major national achievement and congratulated the government, arguing that Pakistan had reaffirmed Kashmir as part of its national territory.

Others criticized the move by arguing that merely depicting territory on a map does not change realities on the ground.

A third viewpoint suggested that government maps had already shown Kashmir in a similar manner and therefore regarded the announcement as largely symbolic.

Understanding the Difference Between Administrative and Political Maps

Much of the debate resulted from confusion between different types of maps.

Administrative maps showing Pakistan’s internal divisions have existed for many years. Maps circulated by various government departments often highlight administrative boundaries for official purposes.

The newly issued map, however, is a political map. Its purpose is to present Pakistan’s official political position regarding its international boundaries and disputed territories.

The map was approved by the Federal Cabinet and was intended for use in official publications, educational material, and international presentations.

Features of New Pakistan Political Map

According to the official position reflected in the map:

  • The areas of Jammu and Kashmir administered by India are shown as disputed territories.
  • The map states that the dispute should be resolved in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
  • Pakistan’s claimed boundary extends towards Himachal Pradesh in accordance with its stated position.
  • Siachen is shown within Pakistan’s claimed territory.
  • The boundary adjoining China has been left open in recognition of the separate territorial dispute between India and China.
  • The Line of Control (LoC) is clearly marked.
  • The map also states that Azad Jammu and Kashmir remains part of Pakistan under its existing constitutional arrangements.

A Diplomatic Expression of Pakistan’s Position

According to this perspective, the new political map is an expression of Pakistan’s long-standing official position on Kashmir rather than an alteration of facts on the ground.

Its significance is primarily symbolic and diplomatic, communicating Pakistan’s stance internationally while remaining consistent with its stated policy that the dispute should ultimately be resolved through the framework of United Nations resolutions.

National Issues Should Rise Above Politics

The new political map represents an official decision of the State of Pakistan and serves as a diplomatic document reflecting its stated position.

Issues of national importance, particularly those relating to foreign policy and longstanding international disputes, should ideally be discussed with seriousness and responsibility. Whether by the government or the opposition, such matters deserve informed debate rather than partisan political point-scoring.
