World Snake Day is celebrated on July 16 across the world. The aim of celebrating this day is to create awareness among people about snakes and to save their species by removing fear about them.
To celebrate this day, a ceremony was organized at the zoo in collaboration with the Wildlife Department and other related institutions including the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore and the Lahore Zoo administration. A seminar was organized on this occasion in which Dr. Rizwan, Dr. Warda, Dr. Kamran Saleem and other experts spoke.
Importance of snakes in ecosystem
Experts said that the presence of snakes is not pointless but their role in maintaining balance in the ecosystem is very important. Their elimination will disturb the ecosystem, which will also have an impact on human life. Due to the rapidly increasing population, rural areas are decreasing, which is also reducing the number of snakes. In these circumstances, it is necessary to create awareness about snakes to maintain balance in the ecosystem. Experts also said that if a snake is seen somewhere, it is customary to call an expert and move it to its natural habitat, not to kill it.
Rat snakes are those that protect crops from destruction by eating rats. If these snakes are not present, the number of rats increases dangerously and the crops suffer a lot. Along with this, other types of snakes are also commonly seen.
Snake Management and Feeding
Raising snakes as a hobby is an interesting hobby. Experts said that the most important thing in raising them is their feeding. For them, preference should be given to raising small snakes. Along with this, the place where the snake is kept should also provide a warm place and a cool place because the snake likes to sit in a cool place after eating. Further, the walls of its cage should be such that they can be seen from all sides.
The seminar also discussed the feeding, management and various diseases of pet snakes. Along with this, various methods of controlling wild and pet snakes were also explained.
Difference between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes
On this occasion, experts also explained the difference between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. Although there is no clear difference between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes externally, there are some signs that can be used to estimate them. Poisonous snakes have two teeth, while non-poisonous snakes have more than two teeth.
The head of a poisonous snake is triangular, while the head of a non-poisonous snake is oval. The tail of a venomous snake is usually pointed, while its head has small scales. A venomous snake has striped lines on its body instead of shiny stripes, while a non-venomous snake has a single, uniform line with large scales. Experts said that these signs are external and do not necessarily mean that a snake with a particular appearance is venomous or not.
Public awareness and practical demonstration
Relevant institutions should tell people about the different types of venomous and non-venomous snakes. After the seminar, there was a talk about the hand. People were also told about protective measures in case of snake bites.
On this occasion, different types of snakes were also present, which people held in their hands and took pictures and selfies, with the aim of removing fear of snakes. Experts said that there was a high demand for knowledge about the different types of milky striped snakes in the practical session of the seminar. The elimination of snakes will disrupt the ecosystem, which will also have an impact on human life.
