Lions play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of their habitats. Because, they regulate prey species, especially herbivorous animals like zebras and wildebeests. Without lions, these herbivores animals would overgraze. Overgrazing leads to soil erosion. Therefore, lion conservation is necessary to protect the ecosystem. IUCN has listed lions as a vulnerable species. Moreover, Panthera, an organization is working to protect lions and their habitats. Besides this, they are listed as endangered species on CITES. If the trade of lion parts is not banned, they will be threatened with extinction. World Lion Day is also raising awareness against these threats.
