They are also known as Gray Wolf or Timber Wolf. They are wild ancestors of domesticated dogs with distinguished wolf characteristics. Furthermore, they live in groups called wolf pack. Wolves are the largest non-domestic member of the family Canidae. Their size varies depending on their habitat. Male wolves are usually larger than females. Their coat color is a mixture of gray and brown.
They have longer legs and larger feet than other canids. So, they can move swiftly on deep snow. They have long bushy tails. Moreover, they have large canine teeth and powerful jaws. Therefore, they can pursue prey at 60 km per hour. They have large and heavy head with wide forehead. Furthermore, they have long muzzle while females have narrow muzzle and forehead. They have small and triangular ears and muscled neck. Wolf has a well-developed sense of smell. They prey on animals of different sizes or carcasses.
Wolves have dense and fluffy winter fur, with a short undercoat and long coarse guard hairs. However, guard hairs shed in spring and grow back in autumn. They have long hairs on their cheeks which form tufts. This fur helps them keep warm during winters. Their fur changes color with the seasons which provides them camouflage.

Howling is also amount the wolf characteristics. They are famous for their haunting and melodious howls called wolf howling. Wolves communicate through wolf howling with other wolf pack members. Alpha wolf leads this pack. However, they usually howl in a series of short, high calls in a chorus with other wolves. This Wolf howling maintains wolf pack unity.
Wolf Habitat and Distribution
Wolf habitat ranges from tundra to woodlands, wetlands, shrublands, forests, grasslands, and deserts. However, their habitat also depends on the abundance of prey, snow conditions, and livestock densities. They exist across Eurasia and North America.

Wolf Conservation and International Wolf Day
The wolf population in 2003 was estimated at 300,000 worldwide. Despite the threats, IUCN has listed them as Least Concerns on the red list. However, they are listed under Appendix II of CITES. They have importance to maintain the health and ecological balance. They help to regulate populations of prey species like deer and elk. Many organizations are working on wolf conservation. American Wolf Foundation is working to protect the critically endangered American red wolf. In addition, the Wolf Conservation Center is also working on the survival of wolves through education and research. International Wolf Day also raises awareness of the importance of this animal.
