History of World Tuna Day
In 2016, the United Nations General Assembly voted to officially observe World Tuna Day. Officially, the world observed it, for the first time on May 2, 2017. This day also holds significant economic importance, particularly for nations heavily reliant on fishing industries. According to, the UN many countries depend on Tuna resources for food security. This makes tuna conservation more important for different types of tuna.
Almost 96 countries Worldwide actively participate in the celebration. Moreover, these countries also contribute to tuna conservation efforts. In some countries, overfishing of tuna has led some tuna species to near extinction. World Wildlife Fund has warned that many species of Tuna are now endangered.

Tuna Fish Characteristics
Tuna fish characteristics are interesting and unique. This fish is elongated, sleek, and streamlined fish. It has a rounded body and a forked or crescent-shaped tail. Generally, Tunas are metallic dark blue on the dorsal side while their underside is silvery. Sometimes, they also have an iridescent shine.

Tuna has two closely spaced dorsal fins on its back. Its dorsal and pelvic fins retract when tuna swims fast. Tuna has a keel on one side of the tail base. Moreover, it has a row of small finlets behind the dorsal and anal fins. Also, it has enlarged scales in the shoulder region.
Besides other Tuna fish characteristics, it has well well-developed vascular system beneath its skin. This vascular system acts as a temperature-regulating device.
Tuna is an obligate ram ventilator and relies on a specialized respiratory system that propels water over its gills as it swims. This system enables tuna to oxygenate blood during long-distance migrations. Consequently, its muscular metabolism generates continuous heat, granting it the ability to regulate the body temperature. This thermoregulatory capacity gives tuna a unique feature among all fishes. Due to this ability, tuna can tolerate a wide range of temperatures in water.
Types of Tuna Species
There are more than a dozen tuna species all over the world. Different types of tuna are divided into two groups.
True species
True species belong to the genus Thunnus. This genus Thunnus further classified into two subgenera. One is Thunnus the Bluefin group and the second is Neothunnus the Yellowfin group.
The Bluefin group includes the following species. Albacore Tuna, Southern bluefin tuna, Bigeye tuna, Atlantic bluefin tuna, and Pacific bluefin tuna.
Yellowfin group includes Yellowfin tuna, Blackfin tuna and Long-tail tuna.

Other Species
