Workshop on Ruminant Diseases including Diseases of Wild Ruminants held at UVAS. The Pathology Departments of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Jhang in collaboration with the Davis Thompson Foundation and the Global Health Pathology Network, USA, organized a three-day international workshop on the topic of diagnosis of diseases in ruminants, including wild ruminants, at the City Campus of the Veterinary University Lahore.

Dr. Corey Brown, Professor, Department of Pathology, University of Georgia, and Dr. Patricia Gaffney, Director of Disease Investigation, San Diego Zoo, California, were the resource persons for the workshop. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed attended the inaugural ceremony.

The workshop was attended by more than 60 faculty members, researchers and students, including Principal Veterinary College Jhang Professor Dr. Muhammad Fayyaz Qamar, Chairperson Department of Anatomy Veterinary University Professor Dr. Hafsa Zainab, Chairperson Department of Pathology University of Agriculture Faisalabad Professor Dr. Farzana Rizvi and Dr. Muhammad Kashif Saleemi.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Professor Dr. Naseem Ahmed said that Pakistan has a large number of cows, buffaloes and sheep and is one of the leading countries in the world in milk production. He said that Pakistan’s dairy sector has developed rapidly during the last ten years and a large number of high-yielding animals have also been imported during this period. He said that infectious and non-infectious diseases are considered a major obstacle to the survival and profitable business of the dairy sector.

He emphasized that timely diagnosis of diseases can control major economic losses and increase the profitability of milk and meat farming.

Chairman Department of Pathology Veterinary University and Patron of the workshop, Prof. Dr. Asim Aslam welcomed the foreign speakers and local participants and highlighted the importance of diagnosing diseases through necropsy.

Workshop organizer Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed highlighted the objectives of the workshop and various learning aspects. He said that the aim of organizing this workshop is to refresh the knowledge related to the diagnosis of diseases of domestic and wild ruminants.

On the first day of the workshop, the symptoms of diseases were taught through internal physical examination of ruminants after death. Special focus was given to comparative diagnosis by looking at the symptoms of diseases related to the respiratory system.

On the second day, internal examination of the bodies of two wild animals was done for the diagnosis of clostridial diseases.

On the third day of the workshop, discussions were held on the diagnosis of blood parasites, metabolic problems and lumpy skin diseases.

During the workshop, the participants were also informed about the various steps of sample collection, labeling, processing and submission to the laboratory.

During the workshop, Dr. Corey spoke about the Global Health Pathology Network’s telepathology initiative, which is promoting mutual communication between pathologists from all over the world. This network is being led by Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed from Pakistan and Dr. Sarah Korner from Michigan State University.

Vice Chancellor University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed appreciated the efforts of Prof. Dr. Asim Aslam, Dr. Yasin Tipu, Dr. Matiur Rehman, Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, Dr. Ghulam Mustafa, Dr. Adim Rafi and other organizers of the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, certificates were distributed among the participants and organizers. The participants thanked the organizers for organizing this international workshop.
