Importance of Poultry Industry
Human population of Pakistan is 192.17 million numbers, making it the world’s sixth populous country with annual meat production of 3696 million tons. Poultry industry contributes 30% in the total meat production and fulfilling 40% protein requirement of the population. Poultry industry is the second largest industry with investment of 700 billion rupees in Pakistan and ranked 11th poultry producer country. While its share in national GDP is 1.3%, generating direct and indirect employment for 1.5 million people. Poultry meat is playing the vital role to keep check on the prices of mutton and beef. Chicken prices are economical and are used by every income segment of the society.
Nutritional Value of Chicken: Protein, Fat and Essential Nutrients
Poultry industry is providing nutritionally beneficial food in shape of meat and eggs as a protein source as well as essential vitamins and minerals. Moreover, poultry meat is an important provider of the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially the omega 3 fatty acids that is needed for brain functioning, cell growth, and also lowers the blood cholesterol level. Omega 3 is essential fatty acid that body can’t synthesize so its requirement has to be fulfilled through food. Chicken meat contains two to three times more polyunsaturated fatty acids than red meat (beef and mutton).
Protein is a key element of a healthy human diet. The body utilizes protein for new cells generation, repairing of old cells, and cell maintenance. 100 grams of chicken meat provides 4 grams of fat and 31 grams of protein. However, daily requirement of an average person is 56 grams per day (0.8 gram per kg of body weight). Poultry meat also enrich in vitamin B3 (niacin) aids in metabolism; B6 (pyridoxine) important to the immune system and blood sugar; B7 (biotin) aids in cell growth; and B12 (cobalamin) involved in nerve & red blood cell maintenance. Therefore, chicken will be the most consumed protein source throughout the world by 2030.
Though, pulses contain amino acids but lack some essential amino acids. However, Egg and Chicken meat rich in essential amino acids like lysine, threonine, and sulphur containing amino acids (methionine and cysteine), required for human growth. Protein quality is measured by the ratio of amino acids converted into protein to the amino acids provided called net protein utilization, which is much higher for chicken egg (87) than grains (40).

One egg is rich in 13 essential nutrients along with 70 calories and 6 grams of protein. Egg protein contains time release energy which helps maintain blood glucose levels and makes people feel full and energized longer. Consumption of one egg per day will have no effect on blood cholesterol.
