Milk Price in Karachi may hit 300 Per Litre amid inflation

The Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association, DCFA Pakistan, has announced that if the administration does not formally notify the new price of milk, then the milk price in Karachi will be fixed at Rs 300 per liter from October 11. The organizations of dairy farmers, wholesalers and retailers jointly announced that an increase in the price of milk is inevitable according to the current cost. They say that the rising costs, especially the inflation of fodder and feed after the recent rains, have put farmers under severe pressure.

Meeting on Milk Price in Karachi

On the other hand, the meeting could not decide on the price of milk in this regard. According to Shakir Umar Gujjar, President of DCFA Pakistan, Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association, the cost of milk was fixed at Rs 271 per liter in the recent meeting held at the Commissioner’s Office. However, the meeting could not reach a final decision due to the administration’s failure to issue a notification. He warned that if the administration does not decide on prices by October 11, farmers will be forced to increase the price at their own level, which could push the retail price up to Rs 300 per liter.

Decision in Meeting

The meeting, chaired by Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, decided that the quality of milk will be tested before determining the new price. A committee has been formed for this purpose, which includes representatives of the Sindh Food Authority, Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority, Consumer Protection Council, media and All Karachi Malik Retailers Association. The committee has been directed to obtain 50 milk samples from farmers, wholesalers and retailers from different areas of the city and get them tested in the PSQCA laboratory. The report will be submitted within seven days.

In this regard, the administration’s position is that citizens will not be allowed to sell substandard milk and the price will be fixed according to the quality. Shakir Omar says that farmers are already under severe financial pressure due to rising production costs and if immediate relief is not provided, milk supply could be affected.
