Issues of the Veterinary Pharmaceutical Industry

He said that the annual market size of veterinary medicines in Pakistan has reached about Rs 90 to 100 billion, while the livestock sector contributes about 14 percent of GDP to the agricultural economy. Despite this great economic importance, the veterinary pharma industry is facing problems. These include import of raw materials, shortage of dollars and complex regulatory system, which is affecting the productivity of many local companies.

He explained that more than 80 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) used in the manufacture of veterinary drugs and vaccines in Pakistan are imported from abroad. In the past few years, due to the unavailability of dollars, banking restrictions and delays in the import process, shipments of raw materials from many companies remained stuck at ports. It badly affected the local production of drugs. He said that if this situation continues, the availability of essential drugs and vaccines for the treatment and prevention of diseases in livestock may also be affected.

Dr. Asim Mahmood Khan added that more than 200 veterinary drug manufacturing companies in Pakistan face lengthy registration, licensing and regulatory approval processes, which unnecessarily delays the introduction of new products into the market. In view of the risks of diseases spreading in livestock such as lumpy skin and foot-and-mouth disease, timely availability of veterinary drugs and vaccines is very important.
