Illegal slaughtering of Animals, the Federal Government writes to Chief Secretaries

In the context of a letter issued by the office of Provincial Minister for Livestock Punjab Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, Deputy Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Khalid Ashfaq has drawn the attention of the Chief Secretaries, Director Animal Quarantine Department, and DCFA Pakistan to the illegal slaughtering of useful animals. The federal government has recommended measures to all provinces to stop the illegal slaughtering of animals. This is a violation under The West Pakistan Animals Slaughter Control Act 1963 and the Karachi Cattle Slaughter Control Act 1950.

On the other hand, Additional Secretary Technical of the Livestock and Dairy Development Department Punjab, Dr. Usman Tahir, has demanded urgent measures to stop the illegal slaughtering of animals in a letter to the Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners.

 

Illegal Slaughtering of Animals in Major Cities

In Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, and other major cities, especially useful and breedable female animals are slaughtered. In addition, newborn calves are also slaughtered. This threatens to destroy the livestock breeds. In this regard, urgent measures have been recommended to the Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners. In this context, reference has also been made to a task force established in 2020, which included officers and representatives of all departments at the district level.

Shakir Umar Gujjar, President of the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association Pakistan, has welcomed these measures. He says that newborn calves are slaughtered daily in Karachi and other cities. Due to the lack of arrangements for further recycling, useful buffaloes are also slaughtered. Strict action is needed to stop these illegal measures. Shakir Umar has also demanded that the Sindh government play an active role on this issue.
