Animal feed accounts for 70 to 80 percent of the production cost of nutrients obtained from livestock, especially milk and meat. Therefore, work is underway to replace expensive nutrients in animal feed with alternative industrial ingredients.
Fruit Waste Recycling for livestock feed
Being an agricultural country, Pakistan has a large amount of such by-products, which are usually wasted and cause environmental pollution and dirt. In this regard, a joint research project is being initiated between the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna), Austria, which is being funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF).
The value of this research project is 43600 Euros (approximately Rs. 8.71 million) and it will be completed in a period of 2 years and 10 months.
Dr. Khiaosa-Ard Ratchaneewan and project collaborators from Pakistan play a key role in the preparation of this project. The main objective of this project is to look at the effects of Pakistani mango, orange, apple and beetroot by-products on rumen fermentation using modern machinery and techniques.
It should be noted that Dr. Muhammad Abdul Rahman (UVAS) will play a key role in this project, which will demonstrate a good performance between researchers from Pakistan and Austria.
Additional details and background
This is the second project completed by Vetmeduni in a short period of time in which most of the research costs have been taken from the industry and government abroad.
Dr. Mubarak further says that in this regard, such a research network (Research Liaison) will be established in the future as well so that it can play its role in the development of the livestock industry of Pakistan.
Dr. Mubarak Mahmood says that he is extremely grateful to the funding agency BMBWF and the Agency for Education and Internationalization (OeAD) along with Prof. Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Vice Chancellor Veterinary University, Prof. Dr. Talat Naseer Pasha, Prof. Dr. Qendrim Zebeli, Prof. Dr. Kamran Ashraf, Prof. Dr. Zafar Hayat and Prof. Dr. Saima for their guidance.
Dr. Mubarak Mahmood says that this project will not only prove beneficial for the livestock farmers in Pakistan’s vet research culture, but also for the alternative industrial plant by-products. It is worth mentioning here that Dr. Mubarak Mahmood received his PhD degree in July 2020.
