Fleming Fund Country Grant entered its Second Phase in Pakistan to combat AMR

Fleming Fund Country Grant has been extended for its second phase in Pakistan. The Livestock Wing of the Ministry of National Food Security & Research and Fleming Fund Country Grant the United Kingdom signed MOU Extension in Islamabad. Animal Husbandry Commissioner Dr. Muhammad Akram and Team Lead FFCG Dr. Qadeer Ahsan signed this Extension. This Grant of Fleming Fund Pakistan is working on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in accordance with AMR National Action Plan in Pakistan. Moreover, DAI is implementing it in Pakistan.

What is AMR?

The overuse of antibiotics and other drugs reduces their effectiveness. Due to this, these medicines gradually stop working against the diseases. This is called Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). It is also called drug resistance. In this regard, experts encourage the judicious use of antibiotics and other drugs in animals and humans under one health approach. Antimicrobial resistance is a major threat to the world and the number of deaths due to it is expected to reach 10 million annually by 2050. Moreover, its financial impact amounts to $100 trillion.

Fleming Fund Country Grant – FFCG

The FFCG is a program of the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care. This program helps the low and middle-income countries to combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Besides action against drug resistance, it also works for improvement in antimicrobial usage. Moreover, it encourages investment in AMR in these countries. Besides training of health professionals and veterinary professionals under one health approach, public awareness is also part of its activities. Moreover, it works on advocacy and strengthening of systems.

Fleming Fund Pakistan

The first phase of the Fleming Fund Pakistan continued from 2019 to 2023 in Pakistan. DAI implemented it in accordance with AMR National Action Plan. The second phase will continue from January 2024 to December 2025.

Phase two involves the production of AMR data, its analysis, and the sharing of this analysis with decision-makers. Under the One Health Approach, the second phase will involve veterinary professionals and health professionals as well as other stakeholders. Moreover, it will contribute to sustainable investments at both the national and global levels to combat AMR. In this regard, along with the training and awareness of the relevant professionals, it will focus on the strengthening of the system. Further, in this second phase, professionals will get an opportunity to monitor the use of antibiotics at the grassroots level and understand the related issues. Besides this, they will also monitor the reasons for the unavailability of antibiotics to work against certain microbes.

DAI and Fleming Fund Pakistan

DAI is an International Development organization. It works on social and economic development. Its areas of interest include climate, education, health, governance, digital acceleration, and others. Moreover, it also focuses the business sustainability and economic problems. Since 1970, it has worked in more than 150 countries. It is also implementing FFCG in Pakistan according to AMR National Action Plan.
